Greenville, SC: Pimento Cheeseburgers at Northgate Soda Shop

Pimento cheese burgers everywhere are derived from a spot called The Dairy Bar in Columbia, SC. Opened in the 1950s on Main Street, next door to the state capital and university - there were always huge lines at lunch time. Went out of business in the 70s. People have used the Dairy Bar name since, but there's been nothing like the original,

Taste Test: Hot Dogs

Does anyone know if Oscar Mayer still makes "Macchiah" (sp?) brand all beef franks. I remember buying these when I was in college in the 80s. They were Oscar Mayer's premium brand, blue and white label, price 50% more than standard all beef.

What's the Best U.S. City for Burgers?

New York? Don't make me laugh. Pizza perhaps, but burgers are popular in New York now because it's become 'fashionable' thanks to Shack Shack and several other Johnny Come Lately spots.

The best places are where hamburgers are 'in the blood.' Texas and California are at the top of the list. Austin alone has dozens of GREAT burger joints, many unassuming and decidedly unfashionable - Dan's Hut's, El Camino Casino, the list goes on. And they'll be there ten years from now, long after New Yorkers have gone back to eating sprouts, wraps and other vegan goodies.

Midwest is a distant second thanks to variety - butter burgers, White Castle and several excellent regional chains. Virginia deserves mention - White Spot in Charlottesville, Ray's Arlington, Pat's Roanoke and of course Five Guys spreading the word, now going nationwide.

Slice Poll: When Did Your Love Affair with Pizza Begin?

12 years old, moved to Ohio from Hawaii, had never heard of pizza. Great neighborhood spot in Dayton. Pepperoni, green peppers and mushrooms (canned). Pizza was cut in a grid, 3 inch square pieces. Have crazy for it ever since, 40 plus years!

Slice Poll: How Do You Reheat Your Leftover Pizza?

Good topic!

It depends on the pizza leftover. Thin crust can become too hard, brittle to reheat in an oven, Chicago needs to placed directly on oven rack not in a pan or it's mushy, outer edges become petrified if there's already a nice char ala coal-fired, microwave sucks, period! etc, etc.

What's The Best Sandwich You've Ever Had?

Best sandwich or deli spot? Hands down, Koch's Deli in West Philadelphia, between 43rd and 44th. Run by the Koch brothers with their children now. I lived around the corner while at Wharton. They make all the traditonal favs, but will pretty much do anything you ask, short of sprouts this or wheat grass that. Thank God!

I settled on a turkey, chicken salad, Muenster cheese, combo with lettuce and tomato on dark rye, Russian on the side. Absolutely delicious. There's always a line. I can remember that the day they reopened (they close in August) in September the line was down the block. Always worth the wait and always comes with a dose of insight or philosophical perspective from Lou or his brother?? Wonderful place.

What's The Best Sandwich You've Ever Had?

Late at night after a long day, it's hard to beat the English Club on the room service menu at the larger Hyatt Hotels. Always made to order - fresh sliced turkey, apple smoked bacon, a fried egg, lettuce, tomato, with a light and flavorful mustard/mayo concoction on choice of bread. It's served warm and goes great with a tall glass of milk.

Photo of the Day: The Motor Burger from The White Spot in Charlottesville, Virginia

A great place for delicious cheeseburgers. While fried egg and country ham additions are not unique to the White Spot, they've been serving them there for decades. Along with Pat's in Roanoke, Wright's in Staunton and Mike's in Blacksburg, the White Spot is certainly a must on the 'high altar' of Virginia's burger stops. More often than not enjoyed after a night on the town only makes these ample, juicy, full-of-wonderful-favors, burgs more enjoyable.

Double Cheeseburger Po-Boy = Why?

You need to visit Maryland. Cheeseburger subs are everywhere. Here's one of the best:

Ann’s Dari Crème – 7918 Ritchie Hwy, Glen Burnie
A local institution; since 1951 Ann’s has been serving hot tasty foot longs and burgers. The cheeseburger sub “all the way” (with mustard, onions, relish and chili) is simply a visit to heaven for hamburger cognoscente. Ann’s rolls have a wonderful chewy texture with crunchy crust. The 4 patties and American cheese slices on the whole cheeseburger sub require two to handle its notable dimensions.

Restaurants in Philadelphia

Highly recommend The Saloon on 7th Street in south Philly. Despite the name, it's an old school Italian place specializing in traditional fare - clams, mussels, daily pasta specials, chicken/veal, plus the steaks, huge and always sizzling on the platter, are exceptional. Make a resv, it's always packed.

'Top 3 Pizza' and none of the New Haven meccas were included? Who made those decisions; a little anti-eastern bias maybe?

Could the best fried chicken come from a none fried chicken restaurant? Try the 'Coach Stop' in Middleburg Virginia and decide of yourself.

You cannot argue with Pete Lugars, but Pappas Bros in Houston, Angus Barn in Raleigh and for a real surprise, the strip at the Roger Sherman Inn in New Canaan Connecticut deserve a look
