Alan Richman Names Top 25 Pizzas in the U.S.

I wanted to set the record straight about Richman's top 25. The following is a link to my full review of Osteria on my Philadelphia best pizza blog, one of the only two pizza joints from Philly to make it on this list. A little hint: I was very disappointed. Happy reading!

Leftovers: The Day's Stray Links

First, congrats again to WorstPizza.com on our review of their site.

Second, I wish them the best of luck on their offer to AOL of their blog for sale.

Finally, I think that I should start my own top 10 blogs that a company such as AOL should acquire if interested. I am very sure that several of the pizza blogs that I have reviewed would be good contenders including Slice.

On that note, I would hate to see the small blogs with so much promise give in to the big sites. This, in my opinion, will take out the good flavor of the small blog and will add a touch of unwanted corporate. In the end, small blogs should always dominate as they are very personal. When they go corporate, the personal touch is watered down. Us pizza lovers should know about that.

When corporations take over a good thing, for example Domino's or Papa John's, the flavor is lost. But when you go to a small NY pizzeria owned by one passionate chef, you will get the most personal attention that your pizza deserves. Do you see the analogy?

A List of Regional Pizza Styles

This is an awesome page. My comment though is related to the DC jumbo slice. I can confirm that this is the appropriate style for this region as I have spent much time over the years in DC. Their slices at many pizzerias are the size of two average slices. They make a killing off of selling them to the college students. If a 16 inch pie normally has 8 slices, a DC pizza has 4.

From Recipes

Meat Lite: Mushroom, Sausage, Goat Cheese, and Chive Grilled Pizzas

Grilled pizza can be very good if done correctly. This particular pizza, although looks appetizing, I think can be done better. The art of melting cheese on a pizza in such a way to keep all of the other toppings glued in place is not to be underestimated. This recipe, from face value, appears to be too messy. I can just imagine eating this pizza and the toppings falling all over the place. Maybe substituting the goat cheese for mozzarrella would solve the problem?

Maria's Pizza, Milwaukee

I grew up in Milwaukee and as a child; my family always went to Maria on Greenfield almost weekly; usually after church on Sunday nights to get a Pizza (or two) to go. It basically became a family tradition. I left Milwaukee in '78 and currently live in Kansas City, MO but we still frequent Maria's (now located on Forest Home Ave) whenever we visit family in Milwaukee. I have traveled extensively and cannot find a pizza anywhere that compares to it. I love its great aroma and wish they would franchise as we can't get it here and I often crave its original, one-of-a-kind texture and taste. Dave Allen.

I spotted this flavor offering at an ice cream store in Annapolis, MD. SUPERtasty, though that was the first time.

From Serious Eats

What Is Superman Ice Cream?

I love Superman Ice Cream and my boyfriend from New York thought it sounded disgusting. He went for a walk one time while in Michigan and stopped at Strohl's for an ice cream and decided to give Super Rainbow (named changed because of copyrights) a try and loved it. BTW Strohl's flavors are SUPER RAINBOW—Blue moon, red pop, and lemon ice creams swirled together. A gallon that I bought stated Blue moon, Banana, and Raspberry. So I think it depends on where you buy it and they do taste slightly different. Though I think the Blue moon is the key flavor and over powers the others a little, so the difference is not that noticable. I will post any other flavors I see posted on the ice creams. And for those who never had it you do not realize what you are missing.

as a kid we just called it the "green sauce" !! was the only restaurant in paris that my parents could get me as a 6 year old to be excited about. From practicing being a pushy parisian in the line outside before the doors open to listening to our waitress tell my Dad that she had waited on richard nixon I loved the place!! Hopefully they add up the tab on the paper table clothes! can't wait to start guessing what's in the sauce all over again!

All of my friends in NC think I am absolutely CRAZY! There is a sweet shop in Boone/Blowing Rock (the mountains) that sells it and no matter what I have to have it when I visit there! I walked down the street when it was snowing with a waffle cone filled with it! I haven't lived in MI in years and nobody anywhere else I have been seems to know about it. My friends in NC also think it is disgusting- but they didn't like Faygo Redpop either so what do yhry know? Ha, they just don't have the refined taste buds that those of us who were born/lived in MI have :)

I'm from southern california and they used to sell it everywhere in the 1990s but I recently tried to find it but no one has it and there also used to be a loony tunes brand knock off of the superman icecream but I still can't find either

If you love these restaurants in Paris like I do, then you will you will think you are in heaven at this place. It is so much like the original in Porte Maillot that even the lampshades decorated with gondolas are the same. The food is just like the French version, the sauce is just as amazing, the fries just as perfectly done, and the profiteroles just as luscious. Don't expect this place to add other entrees, brunch, vegetarian options, butter or ketchup. The other ones have never veered from their formula and there is a line out the door every day. When we left at 1 the place was hopping! I'll be back for sure!!!

What Is Superman Ice Cream?

At summer camp in NY state (dutchess county) we had something that sounds pretty similar, but called it "CRAZY VANILLA". 20 years later, and an ocean away, I dream about it..

From Serious Eats

What Is Superman Ice Cream?

Growing up in Michigan, I almost always got superman ice cream when I had ice cream as a kid. There is something about the flavor and the visual appeal.

My tastes may have gravitated more towards chocolate in general now, however whenever I visit Michigan I always get a scoop of superman with a scoop of brownie nut fudge. I call it "The Tammy", named after a friend who was the first to try this daring (yet delicious!) combination.

Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecote: A Parisian Steakhouse Makes Its U.S. Debut

I really hope the franchisees aren't counting on dinner business. 52 and Lex is a ghost town after 7pm.

Their success at lunch will depend on how quickly they add items other than soppy salad, steak and fries to the menu, as well as a breakfast/brunch daypart. And it's a booze-free corner as well. Good luck.

Also, this being NYC, make sure there is a vegetable substitute for the fries (and the steak, for that matter) and a no sauce/sauce on the side option. As soon as they introduce a full menu, the steak thing will fall below 20% of their sales.

From Serious Eats

What Is Superman Ice Cream?

I didn't realize that Superman icecream was just a Michigan thing. I grew up in metro Detroit and I just asked my husband (a native Pennsylvanian) if he had ever heard of it. A resounding "no" (along with a "that sounds really gross!) He sure missed out!

From Serious Eats

What Is Superman Ice Cream?

@ kimonkey- Im pretty sure they have purple cows still. I have not eaten there, but in the Meijers near my house there is a little ice cream shop called Purple Cow.

I feel sorry for the people who have never had the luxury of eating superman.

From Serious Eats

What Is Superman Ice Cream?

Columbus, OH had the Superman stuff, too. My little brother loved it. It tasted like a berry-flavored bubble gum and was so injected with food coloring, I'm sure it would turn any body part it came in contact with blue for the rest of the day. My Mom was a saint for allowing my brother to get it.

Cheeseburger Mash-Up: Indian and In-N-Out

When I lived in the UK, they had a veggie burger that tasted and looked EXACTLY like that (slightly green, Indian spice flavor) at McDonald's of all places. Perhaps because I was in Birmingham, which has a large Indian/Pakistani population. I think it is still there as a 'Spicy Veggie Deli' burger.

Maria's Pizza, Milwaukee

I am dying reading these comments - hilarious bc I am in the same boat. Raised in Milwaukee and still consider it my hometown - 15 yrs removed. I have never heard of Maria's bc I grew up on the westside and never went on the southside - except to hit Virginia's in highschool. THE PIZZA LOOKS AWESOME. My family does the pizza crawl (last ranking was Caldarone Club downtown, Pizza Man, Lisa's, Balisterie's, and Zaffiros - my dad's fav had a bad showing). Growing up it was Michaels on Fon du Lac and Capital with the homemade fries (still always need fries w/ my pizza) which had moved to Waukesha, but not the same. Then it was Parente's on 124th and North (still my fav that closed in 1989??). Now it is Pizza Man, because of the crust, fries and wine. Waiting for a place in Chicago to compete. IN THE MEANTIME, I AM MAKING PLANS TO GO TO MILWAUKEE TO EAT AT MARIA'S.
