Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box

I made a blt using Peppered Bacon Farm Bread and Nueske's Apple smoked bacon, and served it with a Surly Coffee Bender. It was Salty, Porky, luscious, and had a touch of coffee from the beer. Truly, a moment to savor.

Cooking for One..

Yeah,
I agree that soups and stews are things that you can defrost.

I often make a green salad dressed with oil and vinegar, and put a poached egg on top.

Baked potatoes with vegetables and beans.

Cook the Book: 'The Best Soups in the World'

Hot and Sour Soup. I know how sad that is- I was cold having waited for a bus that never came, and the szechuan restaurant was on my way to another stop. I walked in and ordered a cup of hot and sour soup, and that $1.85 that I paid changed my day. Peppery, vinaigery, thick with pieces of bamboo, mushroom and tofu. Delicious!

What's for dinner tonight?-10/02

Last night I roasted a butternut squash and caramelized some onions. I think I will make a lasagne out of it. I am going to make a Bechamel with sage and black pepper, and I was thinking about using Gruyere as the cheese. any thoughts?

Your unexpectedly best dish this summer

I made Alton Brown's pickled beets, and have been eating them on everything. I would suggest making a pickled beet sandwich with sourdough, and mozzarella.

Cook the Book: '660 Curries' by Raghavan Iyer

I was a freshman in College in Duluth, Minnesota. I had never had curry of any kind, so when we opened the door to walk in, I was blown away by the smell of the spices and garlic. I decided to make my first time special, so I got a peswari naan, samosas, and then two entrees- Chicken Vindaloo, and a Chana Saag. Wow, now I realize that it was mid-western Indian restaurant, but I had never tasted anything like it before. The Vindaloo made me thing about Vinegar in a different light, and Incidentally, it was my first time ever eating chickpeas. They were tender, but firm, and held up to the spinach, and the tomato. I had enough food for 3 days, and after three days, I went back. I know eat some sort of daal 3-4 times a week. Besides my Joy of Cooking, my copy of Julie Sahni's Classic Indian Cooking is the most stained cookbook in my collection.

While traveling, if a destination has a good Indian restaurant, I always go there now.
