I tell my non tipping customers that t.i.p.s. stands for "to insure proper service" and yes I wait on everyone else before them. Of course I work at a neighborhood corner bar but I still give the same service that I gave at the 5 star hotel bar I used to work at.

What's a Reasonable Automatic Gratuity?

I worked in restaurants as a server and bartender for many years and yes TIP stands for To Insure Proper Service. Meaning you tip according to the service you received. I usually tip 20% and much more for great service but I live in one of the highest tipping cities. I understand the want to automatically add it as there are alot of people who do not know how to properly tip based on service or even worse think tipping is optional but I still don't agree with it. I know how much I am going to tip on a meal and if I receive my bill and the tip is already added then that is all I tip even though most of the time I was planning on tipping more unless I am with a party of 8 or more. Then I expect the gratuity to be on the check and will still tip what I think the server deserves.
To ZoetMB who doesn't understand why the waiter gets tipped and thinks that all he does it take the order I can clearly see that you have no idea what goes on in a restaurant. This is another reason why I think everyone should have to wait tables for at least a month at some point in their lives! It would clear up so much ignorance.

My husband's grandmother has been making the turkey forever and it has always been an unbelievably dry sawdust affair. Gravy doesn't even help. This continued on because no one had the heart to tell her until the dry turkey debacle of '07. Tension was running high all day and finally my mother in law exploded and ranted for 5 minutes straight about how the turkey is DRY! SO DRY! Which the rest of us found hilarious. And as a bonus my brother in law has taken over the turkey duties and he makes the juiciest most perfect turkey ever!
