Dear AHT: Where to Get Kosher Burgers in NYC

Talia's is awful, just awful. As a Kosher eater, I have little choice and live just a few blocks from there, and I *still* have stopped going there. The food is terrible, (tough, barely chewable meat, etc.). Once, after a miserable service experience (waited 20 minutes for a menu and 30 minutes for a check after asking multiple times) the owner's answer was to shrug and say, "OK, don't come back if you don't like it." I took his advice.

Try Abigael's Grill on Broadway for decent Kosher food.

Mixed Review: Betty Crocker's Oatmeal Caramel Bars

When I make Oatmeal Carmelitas (which this sounds like) I just thicken a jar of caramel desert topping with flour. I also hate unwrapping caramels.

I'm pretty klutzy. It tends to drop right off my fork.

I think I was meant for the American way of eating.

I have tried the European manner of eating but as a righty, it was just too awkward. Since the majority of people are right-handed, how do Europeans do it? The fork is used more than the knife, since some foods don't need to be cut. So why would you use your left for the fork if you are right-handed?

Hostess is taking over Drake's? Noooooooooo!

Drake's pies were a treat of my childhood; just seeing this picture took me right back. Apple were prevalent, blueberry were the rare treat.

I think it's the length and lack of cuts that shocked me more than the sexism. When was the last time you saw a commercial like that? Whereas any old Super Bowl commercial is as misogynistic as this.

This is so funny! I just bought Heinz Organic because it didn't have HFCS. I know, it's dying by knife rather than gun, but I just like the taste of sugar better.

Guy, I agree. A burger does NOT need cheese to make it taste good. Check out Burgers Bar. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I don't think anyone would.

Dear AHT: Where to Get Kosher Burgers in NYC

I was born in Israel and raised in Brooklyn and live in Manhattan for 10 yrs. I'm also part of the old school hypoc-kosher crew that created their own rules in secret from their rabbi...I only don't eat pork and shellfish. Cheeseburgers and Chicken Parm somehow make the cut..... My family was Glatt Kosher too. What I'm getting at is that I've had the finest kosher and unkosher meat good money can buy in the 5 boroughs.Kosher meat blows. I'm not saying there aren't people that do it right, I'm just saying their access to fine meat is aweful (in Manhattan) and I'm sure it's worse elsewhere. KD (Kosher Delight) has been my staple for steamed-soggy-bun burgers growing up. The food there is crappy-good for the most part, the fried chicken is awesome. Difaro's pizza is 2 blocks away on Ave. J in Brooklyn, so serious eats could have a party between KD and Difaro's in and across the street Jerusalem II Pizza (which is the best kosher pizza joint hands-down) all in one one day (Someone, please invite me). Talia's steak was ok. It wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. Same for the burger. It's a real shame because there's no reason you can't have an awesome kosher burger....A great burger doesn't need cheese...just some bloody fatty goodness I call "Shacksplooge".

Ben's Delicatessen (not glatt) on 38th St. between 7th and 8th Avenues in Manhattan makes a decent hamburger. Ben's Best Delicatessen (an entirely different establishment, also not glatt) in Rego Park, also makes a good burger.

Although I've never actually eaten at Burgers Bar, I have heard great things about it and everyone I know loves it.
I have eaten in kosher delight and whenever I'm in Manhattan I always go eat there. I absolutely love their burgers and fries!!!

You don't have to be Jewish to love Burgers Bar. They make a unique, really tasty burger that anyone and everyone can and will enjoy. No cheese required. Really, you won't miss it. I'm certain of it. Good stuff!!

I'm an American lefty and I've always eaten in a basic European manner; friend's grandmother and her European friends. Except, I hold my knife in my left hand and fork in my right. I am pretty much ambidextrous about everything but handwriting.

Also, it's very bad manners to cut up all of something before eating. Just as it is bad manners to butter all of a roll/slice of bread (unless it's breakfast toast) before eating. Some Americans just have very bad table manners.

Hostess Fruit Pie, One Less Thing For Me to Eat Before I Die

i just posted a website for ordering the pies but after a little more research i found that the company is bogus. They don't ship anything, they take your money and run. F them for that

DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM THAT WEBSITE OK...................

Hostess Fruit Pie, One Less Thing For Me to Eat Before I Die

I used to eat all kinds of the pies as a kid and i loved them. I am 27 now and just recently discovered the delicious nature of the pies. I do agree with you guys about the half moon pies as opposed to the square ones. Don't get me wrong the square ones do the trick, but the whole pie is the daddy of fruit pies. the reason im writing this blog is because i found a website in which you can order the old school half moon pies and have them ordered to your house. This is the website. http://www.freshchocodiles.com/hostess/fruit_pies.html

Mixed Review: Betty Crocker's Oatmeal Caramel Bars

@ag3208 & @pielady:
Hmmm- if you didn't want to unwrap the caramels... I bet you could use something like Sander's Caramel Apple Topping. I thought they just had caramel (In facts, I think they did for sure!)- but on their website it and two unique caramel flavors- apple or pear.

Loved this post! :D TY for posting it!

Mixed Review: Betty Crocker's Oatmeal Caramel Bars

@beccaMJ- My family's most cherished cookie bar recipe is for Oatmeal Camelitas! People ask for them on their birthdays rather than cake. These bars look very similar to that recipe. You could definitely use dessert topping (caramel or dulce de leche) and just add flour to thicken. I'm craving them after reading this!

From Serious Eats

Mixed Review: Betty Crocker's Oatmeal Caramel Bars

I'm tempted to do this with jarred dulce de leche instead of the caramels. I too am too lazy to unwrap all those caramels.

From Serious Eats

Mixed Review: Betty Crocker's Oatmeal Caramel Bars

I skip any recipe that wants me to unwrap a bunch of caramels. Well, maybe I don't skip it, but I've discovered that I'd much rather make some caramel than do the unwrap thing. It really doesn't take long and is better tasting.

It looks as if this mix is too fussy--not what a mix is supposed to be about. Might as well make it from scratch.

I have always eaten like this, and I'm nothing but a dirty Texan. No utensil switching, and must have one bite of everything on my fork at meal's end! It's like a mini eating game - rationing amongst the serving proportions. I guess I never realized most folks don't do it this way - always too absorbed in my own plate. :)

Hostess Fruit Pie, One Less Thing For Me to Eat Before I Die

I signed up just to comment on Hostess fruit pies. I was eating one a while back and had to ask myself why or if I liked it. The fond memories of them fell away as I evaluated the one I was eating and found that the crust smelled like Play Dough. I don't remember making this connection as a child (which seems odd to me), and I can't help but wonder if the recipe has changed over the years. At any rate I was eating another one tonight and had to stop and see if anyone else thought they smelled like Play Dough (my wife agrees that they do) That brought me here.
It is probably too late to get a reply about this because the last post was from november, oh well.
By the way, my favorites groing up were cherry and apple and were, as was the one I ate tonight, half-moon shaped.
I still find them edible, but will tell my wife not to buy them for me again.
I can't get past the Play Dough thing.

I'm an American who has never travelled abroad (not by choice, I assure you). Fork-switching seems perfectly natural to me, because it means the dominant hand does all the persnickety work. Fork concave-side-up - well, it just feels like things are less likely to fall off.

Having said that, I've never cut up an entire steak/chop/meat-thing at once before taking the first bite.

From Serious Eats

I agree with Becca (and am also named Rebecca, so maybe it's a Becca thing). I'm right handed. My mom's a leftie. When I was little I used to want to copy everything my mom did, but I could not figure out how to coordinate eating with a fork in my left hand.

Perhaps Brits/Europeans are better at the ambidextrous thing over Americans?

From Serious Eats

Snapshots from the UK: How the English Eat

Becca: how difficult can it be to use your left hand to move the fork from the plate to your mouth? The knife is not just used for cutting it is also used as a "blocker" that pushes the food onto the fork when the fork is moved towards the fixed knife.

Hostess Fruit Pie, One Less Thing For Me to Eat Before I Die

As someone from the Northeast who was raised on "real" snack cakes--Tastykakes--I wouldn't consider eating anything by Hostess, Drakes, or Table Talk. That's strictly kid stuff. Tastykake fruit pies are made with real lard, and very few artificial ingredients.
If you've never had a Tastykake fruit pie, you haven't lived. Go to their website and mail order some.

@delilah I was scrolling to the bottom to say just that! I stay Uptown, and my boyfriend has a serious thing for the Hubig's chocolate. They're okay occasionally, but they generally make me cringe. I love the fruit ones though, especially apple and lemon. Silly Hostess, pies are from Hubig's!
