The whole classic menu really appeals to me, but the brussel sprouts and bacon really stand out.
Do You Like Eating Pie Crust By Itself?
Nowadays I like the crust and the filling, but as a kid I loved the crust, raw or baked. My grandmother used to roll out any leftover dough, cut it into squares, and sprinkle it with cinnamon sugar before baking. What a treat!
Cook the Book: 'The Pioneer Woman Cooks'
Other than Serious Eats, I'd have to say Simply Recipes or KA Flour's Baker's Banter. But I've just gotten some excellent recommendations here in the comments for new blogs to try--thanks, everyone!
Cook the Book: The Southern Italian Table
Pastina (tiny pasta) with butter.
Serious Cocktails: Women and Whiskey
I've tried, I've really tried to like whiskey. I could attribute my dislike to a youthful indiscretion, one night long long ago when I had several whiskies with one of my cousins. I still remember the glasses we used--my aunt and uncle had a set of highball glasses with the signs of the zodiac engraved in gold. All the rage back in the sixties and seventies. When I got home I promptly threw up, and my mother never let me forget it.
I must admit one of my sisters truly does enjoy whiskey. I can't say I know many other women who do! I wonder if it might be a generational thing. My husband certainly enjoys it, and I love the aroma, but to this day a taste of whiskey makes me gag.
Cook the Book: Pumpkin Baking
My favorite pumpkin recipe tends to be the last one I've made, and in this case it's olive-oil pumpkin bread with walnuts and freshly grated nutmeg.
The First Issue of 'Gourmet' Magazine: The January 1941 'Holiday Issue'
I do think it's sad that Gourmet is folding, but I haven't enjoyed it much in recent years. Some articles have seemed almost agressively political, which is an odd thing for me to complain about, since I enjoy politics and generally agreed with the view presented in any case. I guess I just don't like mixing politics and cooking.
And in the past year or so it's been all pretty pictures and not many practical recipes. I do realize that travel and restaurant reviews have always been a major focus, but it's seemed so much less accessible than in the past. I still remember the first issue I ever bought. It was from sometime in 1978, and showed a beautiful tropical beach from the air with gorgeous turquoise water. That magazine I will miss--the one that introduced me to gourmet cooking.
Cook the Book: 'The Craft of Baking'
Until a few years ago, I'd never made, let alone tasted, pecan pie. I decided to make one for Thanksgiving, and I was amazed! I'd always heard it was too sweet, and maybe many of them are, but the recipe I made had bourbon and not too much sugar and corn syrup. Sure, a little goes a long way, but what richness!
Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'
I was going to say whatever edition of Betty Crocker was in print in 1980 when my husband (then boyfriend) gave it to me for Christmas, but I remember a book I bought a few years earlier when I was still in high school about cooking with herbs, although for the life of me I cannot remember what it was called.
Cook the Book: 'Dishing Up Vermont'
From Wisconsin? Cheese! It's true, it's really true. We make lots and lots of mediocre cheese, it's true, but there are many cheesemakers that are committed to producing high-quality products.
And for extra credit, my favorite cheese factory is Cedar Grove, in Plain. I'm sure there are many other great producers in the state, but Cedar Grove's cheese is fabulous.
Market Scene: Wicker Park & Bucktown Farmers' Market, Chicago
Just gorgeous! I haven't heard about the tomato blight hitting us here in the upper Midwest, thank heavens. My own tomatoes are doing really well, if they are only just starting to ripen. I do feel bad for the folks in the NE.
But.....$1 an ear for organic sweet corn? Yikes!
Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'
Old-fashioned tuna casserole with crushed potato chips. My husband won't eat it, so on those rare occasions when he's not home for dinner, I make it for myself.
Otherwise...refried beans on tortillas with cheese, or pastina with butter.
Cook the Book: '100 Best Vegetarian Recipes'
Tough one.....but I'd have to say chickpea-pasta soup. Sauteed onions and garlic, broth, tomato sauce and seasonings, chickpeas, and in the last five minutes, you toss in 1/2 cup broken-up angel hair pasta. Some grated parmesan on top, and you've got the perfect meal for a winter weeknight.
Cook the Book: 'Canal House Cooking, Vol. 1'
Ratatouille! I love to head to the farmer's market in August when all the ingredients are availble fresh.
Cook the Book: 'The Barcelona Cookbook'
My most memorable tapas experience happened sometime back in the early 1990's when my best friend and I spent a weekend shopping in Chicago. Tapas were all the rage and thought we'd hit Cafe Ba-ba-reeba on the north side of Chicago on our way home--we live in the Milwaukee area, so it was practically on the way--not. This was in the days before google maps (although certainly not before actual maps, ha ha), and we had no idea where we were going, and never found the place, although we did end up passing the infamous Cabrini Green public housing development. So....no tapas, but definitely memorable!
Cook the Book: 'Simple Fresh Southern'
I have made my great grandmother's carrot and zucchini o-shaped loaf for my in-laws for the past three years. I surround the loaf with and put in the middle tons of roasted broccoli - definitely a crowd pleaser, as it goes fantastic with the turkey and mashed potatoes and all the other classic sides!
