From Behind the Bar: On Whiskey

It's odd that as my palate has expanded in virtually every other category of food/drink, it's simplified for Whiskey. I was a bourbon drinker in New Orleans, preferring Booker Noe's Reserve or just Maker's. I still enjoy a good Sazerac or Old Fashioned from time to time, but mostly I just like straight Jameson. Its crisp, refreshing, and warms the throat. Still can't really get into Scotch.

Win Tickets To Brooklyn Beefsteak, September 25

I could probably make it to 4, perhaps even 5 if I prepared myself with a few days of large, stomach-stretching meals (which I have been known to do in the week leading up to Thanksgiving.)

Best Food You've Had at a Music Festival?

Agreed on Jazzfest being tops - Crawfish Beignets in particular.

I was impressed by Lollapalooza's food last week. Wish I could say the same for the beer - probably the worst beer menu in the dozens of festivals I have been to over the years.

The 10 Best Pizzas in NYC

I'd quibble with Sal and Carmines making it on here as the typical NYC slice entry - I think Ray's on Prince has it beat by a mile when it comes to the quintessential city slice. I found Sal and Carmines to be pretty mediocre. My 2 cents.

New Pizza Joint in Astoria

There's also a new slice joint 2 blocks from me, at the corner of Newtown Ave. and 30th Street. While I haven't been in to try anything yet, I did walk by and catch a glimpse of an appealing-looking upside down Sicilian slice. Otherwise it looks like your average utility slice joint (though sparkling clean.)

The funny thing about it is the name: Papa Gino's. I grew up outside Boston so that name brings back all the childhood memories of heading to the chain for pizza parties, breadsticks and whatnot.

I'll try and stop there this weekend and give my thoughts here.

Red Hook Food Vendors

I have previously caught the free water taxi provided by IKEA from lower Manhattan (where Wall St. hits the East River/Harbor) on a Saturday. Worked perfectly, with one caveat: riders who purchase something from IKEA and have a receipt from the store have priority boarding on the way back to Manhattan, and there can be LONG lines to get back. I'd recommend stopping in for a cup of coffee or snack from IKEA before you head to the shuttle; just be sure to hang onto your receipt!

Astoria, Queens: Lorusso Gourmet Pizza & Focaccia

Between this and the burger review from the other week, my neighborhood to-eat list keeps on getting better and better! Keep these coming, Adam!

From A Hamburger Today

Astoria, NYC: A Great Burger in an Unlikely Spot at Astor Bake Shop

I guess my main issue with smashed/SS-style burgers is that they're not a meal, to me at least. I have to eat two shackburgers to feel sated (I never order fries). They're absolutely delicious, of course, but I often feel like I didn't get a full meal for what I paid. Pub burgers are a meal.

From A Hamburger Today

Astoria, NYC: A Great Burger in an Unlikely Spot at Astor Bake Shop

Thanks for the additional info. I generally lean towards heartier, pub-style burgers and as such am a big fan of Sweet Afton's, but the pics of this one make me think it could give the Afton burger a run for its money.

Service has to be downright ghastly for me to really have a beef with a neighborhood joint like this, looking forward to checking it out.

From A Hamburger Today

Do you have a food craving that you wish you didn't have?

Peanut Butter. Milkshakes.

Without those 2 I'd probably have a six-pack.

From Serious Eats

Taste Test: Peanut Butter, Creamy

I swear by 365. Mainly because I seek to avoid the added sugar, salt, and especially hydrogenated oil of non-natural peanut butters. They're delicious, to be sure, but after a while you won't miss the added sweetness (the texture of Skippy is pretty unbeatable, though.)

At $4 for a large, 365 is also the best bang for your buck.

So Long, Folks (and See You Next Week)

Congratulations on the new gig, Adam. I moved to NYC just before Christmas in 2008, and Slice has been an invaluable resource as I've slowly eaten my way through the wonderful world of NYC Pizza (the same goes for SENY and all other foods here in town, but pizza holds a special place.) Glad to know we'll still be hearing from you on SE from time to time. Cheers.

Drinking the Bottom Shelf: Evan Williams Bourbon vs. Jack Daniel's

I was weaned on Jim Beam in college. It's not too often that I drink Bourbon anymore (more of an Irish guy now), but when I do it's rarely more than a single drink, and of the higher-end stuff. Maker's at a minimum, for Mint Julep's, and usually some other high-end small batch if I'm drinking it straight.

What? No commentary on The Minimalist?

I haven't paid much attention to the Minimalist, but I received a copy of HTCE this past Christmas and it's quickly become indispensable for me. I've only really started to try cooking anything past the most basic stuff in the past year, and am still at a point where I follow directions very closely. I find the book enjoyable to read, have picked up a lot of good ideas and techniques, and have already made many more different meals than I ever thought to try before. I do see how it could be too simplistic - in several instances I've already tweaked recipes to my own tastes. But as a jumping off point to becoming a well-rounded cook I think it is an excellent book. I see myself trying to master most of what is in there over a couple of years and then taking it from there on my own, or with more elite recipes/techniques. I'll probably start going into the Minimalist archives to expand what I get from HTCE, too.

Searching for the Perfect Hangover Cure

A well-constructed bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, a bloody, OJ, coffee, and lots and lots of water.

Also, not sure if this is taboo around here, and I don't partake anymore, but the fact is that nothing instantly cures hangover nausea like having a puff of marijuana.
