12 Brussels Sprout Dishes We Love in NYC

The brussel sprouts at Alta really are fantastic. We ended up ordering two bowls. I tried recreating it at home but couldn't get it to taste the same. Sigh...

San Francisco: The Best Tacos in the Mission District?

A huge THANK YOU for including Taqueria Vallarta. I went there at least once or twice a week when I lived in the Mission, and it was somehow even better than any of the taco trucks around.

In New York I thought the only places to get good, CA/Mexican-style tacos were in Sunset Park and Jackson Heights, but last week I stopped by a taco truck parked on Lexington near the 86th St. 4/5/6 stop. Slow, but definitely a taste of CA on the UES.

Terrific Retro Chinese take-out cookbook?

I actually writing a book now that is exactly what you're describing...except it won't come out until 2012. Sorry it didn't come out in time for your sister's present! But if you're willing to wait a year, it's a collection of 100 recipes of Chinese take-out classics, with a lot of history on Chinese food in America. General Tso's, sweet and sour pork, lo mein, etc. Oh yeah, and lots of glossy photos!

If you want to read more about it...

General Tso's Chips from Target: Wait, What?

Terra Chips also makes a General Tso's flavor. You should give them a try; I did a taste-test a month ago and the Target brand is definitely the worse of the two.

Chinese Lay's has all kinds of weird flavors, like Red Wine Chicken, Mexican Tomato, Blueberry, and Lychee. In Korea I also saw Mangosteen-flavored gum.

Equipment: What's the Difference Between a Skillet and a Sauté Pan?

To not spend a ton of money for a great pan, just head down to the restaurant supply stores on the Bowery. You can find 12-inch stainless steel skillets for $15-$20 that last for ages.

The bomboloni at A Voce are also incredible. It's stuffed w/ vanilla cream and used to come with apricot marmelade on the side, though now I think it's a chocolate sauce.

Turf War: Boston's Best Ice Cream

JP Licks is on par with Tosci's. And Boston is one of the few places I know of when, in the dead of winter with below freezing temps, people will still line up out the door for ice cream at popular spots.

$3.59 Caviar at Ikea

I've tried the salmon caviar and it's actually really good for the price. The lingonberry jam is also another Ikea favorite.

A Guide to Soup Noodles in Manhattan's Chinatown

In Mandarin pinyin it's "mian", though it's pronounced more like "mien".

Bo-Ky and the Wong restaurants top my list of noodle shops. Great N.Y. Noodletown used to good, but didn't live up to the hype on my last few visits.
