Serious Cookies: Cocoa Snowflakes

My Grandmother has the same exact recipe box! I love it so much. It is so packed with recipes you have to take them all out at once and thumb through them. I bet there are a ton of green and yellow tin boxes out there filled with delicious treats.

What's your favorite type of holiday gathering?

Me and my girlfriends from High School just got together at a local winery. You bring your own apps and desserts and buy the wine by the bottle. It was great to sit by the fireplace and catch up. It was like our own reunion with out the people we really don't care to see. I'm going to do it with my family soon because it was so great.

Christmas is not Christmas without this one food

For Christmas Eve my family would disown me if I didn't make my homemade Lobster bisque. My Grandma makes these peanutbutter balls that are out of this world. And for Christmas morning my Mom makes a breakfast caserole that is cheesy and loaded with bacon. Yum!

Born and raised in Southern Connecticut. Culinary school in Providence, Rhode Island. New York (Long Island) for 5 years. Now back in Connecticut.

Newly engaged and registering. What should make the list?

My favorite, can't live without items: Williams & Sonoma personalized spatulas in all sizes. Kitchen Aid, Cuisinart food processor, Food Saver-vacuum sealer, Global knife set $$$$, and Le Creuset grill pan and french oven $$$. I almost felt guilty for asking for such high priced things. But believe it or not my registry was cleaned out. My husband and I went to culinary school so our loved ones knew what we really wanted. For more affordable things I went to Bed Bath & Beyond for stuff like veggie peelers and can openers. Congrats and most of all have fun with the process. It's a once in a lifetime experience to use a hand scanner and get to zap everything you want.

The Last Buys of Summer

My favorite memory as a child was shucking corn on a warm indian summer night and have a camp fire in my back yard. We'd wrap the corn in foil with some butter and salt or just leave them in thier husks and roast them in the fire. In my little farm town in Connecticut you can still buy corn from the many farms along route 17 in Northford until mid October.

22 Sandwiches That Will Change Your Life

I've lived in a couple of places where you can find a great sandwich. Number #1 in my book is in Providence, RI. The Butcher Shop on Elmgrove Ave. In the Brown University area. If you love fresh Turkey Sandwiches with all the fixings then this is the place. They also make fresh Roast Beef from scratch. Fresh baked bread from a local bakery tops off any sandwich they offer.

Meatloaf Mania: Awesome Combos?

I lb. ground chuck, 2 eggs, 1 cup of bread crumbs(more if needed),
2 cups shredded cheese, I like cheddar, 1/2 cup of diced tomatoes, 1/2 onion or 1 shallot diced. Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder, Onion Salt, to your taste. Mix together and place in loaf pan. Top with ketchup and Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce or your favorite. Sprinkle some more cheese on top and bake at 350 for 30-40 mins or until 165 degrees.

Special garlic butter recipe wanted!

Garlic Butter is lightly roasted garlic. It just gets the bitterness out and the smoothness and sweetness in. All you need to do is take the garlic bulb cut it in half and salt and oil it. Roast in the oven until garlic is light brown but not burnt. Then when it's cooled off slightly you just press out the warm gooey garlic cloves and mash them or for a more smooth consistency put them in a food processor. You could add anything you want to enhance the flavor of the garlic. Or just enjoy as it is.

Which City Has the Best Pizza?

I was born and raised in New Haven. So with out a doubt I am an true follower of CT "Apizza" as we call it. Pepe's is my favorite. Nothing comes close to the Euphoria of waiting in line for the most mouth watering White Clam Apizza on this God given Planet! I am also a believer in that the pizza you grow up eating is the only pizza you truely love. I haven't found anything like Pepe's in my travels.

These look great, and yes, it's wonderful to see you back, Gina :)

My grandmother used the "X system" for marking the best recipes...triple X meant it was the best, and it's sure funny to see on otherwise innocent, pure recipes ;)

What Five Foods Can't You Live Without?

My five favorite things:
Southern Fried Chicken
Cocoanut Ice Cream
Hot Fudge Sundae
Porterhouse Steak
Garlic Bread

Newly engaged and registering. What should make the list?

Forschner/Victorinox knives. I have 20 years of use on some of my rosewood ones. I like the feel of the newer forged ones, but you can not beat the value of the rosewood or fibrox knives.

A good sharpener - some consider it sacrilege to use an electric sharpener, but I love my Chef's Choice 130 Professional Sharpening Station.

A big cast iron skillet, Lodge is good. Learning how to use it and keep it properly seasoned makes one a better cook.

From Talk

Brand loyalty...which products?

Okay, LPC... since we're discussing the not-so-mundane mundanities (is that a word?)... I like...

Pico Pica Mexican hot sauce for Mexican food
Tapatio Mexican hot sauce for hot dogs (mmmmmm) and bean soups
Herdez salsas, casero and verde (when I don't make my own)
Boar's Head horseradish
Bonne Maman jams and preserves (sugar, not corn syrup! yay!)
And an excellent BBQ sauce (again, sugar, no corn syrup) -- the name escapes me, because I buy it by visual ID.. will post it when I remember.

From Talk

@ LoCo: Mundane? MUNDANE?? HAH! How dare thou ... ;-)

BTW, for hot sauce I have to have Boneyard Brew. Oh yeah, that's some good stuff.

From Talk

Brand loyalty...which products?

Nutella, Fage yogurt, Whole Foods 5-Grain sliced bread, Boar's Head turkey, a lot of stuff from Trader Joe's.

More than brands, I have specific grocery stores where I get certain things (Sahadi's for apricots and rice, TJ's and Whole Foods, C-Town for cheap stuff...the Brooklyn loop.)

From Talk

Brand loyalty...which products?

Not going to help most people here, but I am devoutly loyal to my local farmers and their "brands." Nothing tastes better than naturally grown/raised and local.

From Talk

East coast.......back and forth from PA-NJ-NY over the years. Spent part of every summer with Mom's family in various parts of Canada, mostly Ottawa.

Oh, AuntJone... you hit some that I was thinking of and missed! Thanks for a great catch!

Liquid measures -- yes, two of each. Be sure to get a 4 cup size. I use the 2 cup the most, but just LOVE my 4 cup for heating stuff in the microwave.

Digital scale -- so glad I bought one; don't know how I lived without it! Get one that goes up to 5 lbs and does grams and you're all set.

Thermometer -- digital instant read, awesome.

Towels/cloths -- be sure to get NON-terry or you'll have lint everywhere!!! I love my flour-sack towels and microfiber cloths. I get all of them in white so I can wash in super hot water with bleach. I always have enough to get me through two or three weeks with a fresh one everyday. So easy!

From Talk

Raised in tiny (pop. 800!)farm town in Western Illinois- fresh & local is just what we did. Our beef was pasture raised & slaughtered within a few miles of our house. My best friend's uncle had a farm and each season one of the families got to "name the piggies" The year her brothers got the priviledge they named the hogs after my best friend & I. So each time I ate breakfast at her house- we would be reminded that we were ...errrrr.. eating our namesakes.
Being raised in such a small town- created a bit of wanderlust- for a few years I was a flight attendant- one of my primary goals- eating my way thorugh the country!I've lived in Interlochen MI(summers)Tuscon AZ, Clearwater FL., Philadelphia and now have somewhat settled in Denver CO. (my heart would rather be in Florida on a sailboat drinking a Mojito and eating some conch fritters)
