Kansas City's Grinders and Its Tater Tot Chili Pizza, on 'Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives'

I lived there in KC for 10 years. The pizza doesnt even come close to NY and Philly pizza. We had "The Bronx" pizza place there, was ok.... Then there was "Waldo" pizza. Way different but good. They used provel cheese.

Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks

Pepperoni is a funny thing. Ever notice how if you get a 1/2 pepperoni and 1/2 plain how funny it cooks? There are also different grades of pepperoni, like anchovies. The cheap stuff is just that.
The best way to judge a pie is plain old cheese.
As for toppings, the most unexpected good taste I ever had was a demi-glaze pizza from Paninis Pizza in Piscataway N.J.

This place has the best Grandmas pizza. The plain slice is also fantastic. I have a friend who thinks this is the best pizza in brooklyn!

Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks

ALthough plain cheese is always appreciated, I make 2 special pizzas that my family enjoys. One is buffalo wing chicken with pepper jack cheese, and the other is smoked mozz with sweet sausage and roasted red peppers.

Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks

Feta cheese with tomatoes fresh out of the garden and kalamata olives sprinkled over a round of dough brushed with olive oil, minced garlic, greek oregano and a thin layer of mozzarella cheese is one of my favorite summer time pies. Even better when it's done on the grill.

smoked, thin-sliced ham and green olives...yum
And I make my own pizza at home
Besides plain cheese, the above mentioned are great for a change of pace

No pepperone, love it uncooked with cheese & crackers or antipasto, but not on pizza, overpowers everything else. Same thing with bacon. Good sausage meat or plain cheese for me. And don't even start with those cowpies from Chicago!

Elextendo: You've got me (and the rest of the haters) here. I promise, next time I'm in town visiting the family, I'll stop by Grinders for the TTCP. I will turn off my purist mind and open my pizza-fusionist mind to something creative. (And, to Grinders' credit, Guy Fieri's picks on DD&D are usually right on.) Plus -- I can grab some crab rangoon, if they're still on the menu.

Well people thanks for the pure hatred of Tater tot and chili pizza without ever trying it. It actually tastes better than it sounds..I remember when I first tried peanut butter and apples..the thought was YUK..but in the end pretty good. Is this a purest thing? Have we damaged the slice? I always thought putting avacado on a slice was funky and wrong (and still do).. Please if your in the hood stop in and have a try it has turned into a decent seller so the numbers cant be wrong..

Sausage, chicken and cashew. When the cashews get just a little burn on 'em, oh yeah baby!

I agree. Why is pepperoni the default ingredient?? I just think it's the most fun to say. Pepperoni.

@ultradave: When you put it that way, *I* took the photos and made the "how-to" for the rolled-up frozen pizza. So I probably have no room dissing the tater-chili pizza at Grinders.

I'd make some snarky comment but really, last week I ate a rolled up frozen pizza after reading an entry on this site . . . I've lost any right to make fun of anything.

Their tator tots are good, their pizza is good, but together? Probably not. We maybe should try it when you're back in town. - Jameson

WHY does KC always end up being publicized for the WORST of all possible worlds?! I grew up in KC, left for good, but ended up here again. We have great little dives, but ditzo had to pick one where the cook forgot what he needed at the market. I'm with Gaffer - where's the mob when you need it? YUK! That's NOT pizza.

No wonder everyone on Earth believes there is a black hole between the Appalachians and the Rockies!

@Alm25: I've been to Grinders a couple times on visits back. I like the food there. I didn't know about the Tater Tot pizza or would have ordered it just to see it. The sides and such are great.

I grew up in KC... and moved back there for a while last fall and into the spring.... I discovered Grinders while there... I actually really like their pizza, and yes, it's no where good as NYC, but it beats the competion in my opinion...but this... this I could never do, just wrong on so many levels.

@Adam: You've got to fight the urge. You know deep down that it's wrong to judge without trying. Tater tots are good, chili is good, and pizza is good. Together, they may well be very good.

@Daniel: My arc of pizza snobbery:

1974 to 2000: Not a pizza-snobby bone in my body
2000 to 2006: Moved to NYC, ate my way around, became a NYC-centric pizza snob
2006: Ate so much pizza that I had to readjust my attitude to make things interesting again; re-opened mind to pizza forms other than NYC thin-crust
12/02/2008: Saw Tater-Tot-Chili Pizza and had a relapse of snobbery

Sorry. Can't help it. This falls into the category cheesesteak- or cheeseburger-pizza mashups.

Phew! Lotsa posts. I'm afraid I've never been particularly fond of pepperoni...I don't hate it, but I wouldn't choose it. Go-to favorite? A combo of cheeses, including provolone and Cheddar with caramelized onions. I have had a fabulous Thai pizza, and by that I mean traditional in form (shape, size of crust, laying down of toppings, etc.) but Thai in flavors (chicken, purple basil, a bit of peanutty flavor, coconutty flavor, a base sauce that'll blow the top of your head off). That was fabulous...could only eat about a slice and a half but for that many bites, it was intoxicating.

Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks

Whenever I try a new pizza place, I always order "The house special" because I want to see that place's idea of what the ideal pie is.

It is never a plain cheese or pepperoni pie, in my experience.

I almost never order sausage, because I love it and most places use crap.

My favorite place serves a pie with tons of ingredients and I savor every bite for the depth of flavors.
