Time for a Drink: The Last Word

First, this is a wonderful drink. And anyone who has liked an Aviation is likely to like this one.

This drink resurrection thing is no rare phenomenon. There are dozens of forgotten drinks that are reborn, the Aviation (gin, maraschino, lemon juice) probably being my favorite, it re-appeared in the late 90s after being missing in action for decades, and then was re-revived when Creme de Violette came back on the US market and we could make the earliest recipes (gin, maraschino, creme de violette, lemon juice). So if 'The Last Word' is a zombie, its part of a big crowd.

Also, I predict 'The Emerson' will also be resurrected - gin, italian vermouth, maraschino, lime juice - and enjoy 15 minutes of fame.

Hmmm, great idea, but, why not skip the vodka?

Flavored vodka's tend to be way over-priced and you are getting flavor from both your "creme de cassis" and the frozen berries.

Creme de Mur and Creme de Cassis both have alcohol in them

New Year's Champagne Cocktail: The Chic French 75

Awfully lite, don't you think?

Most of the recipes I've seen call for three times as much gin - an ounce of gin, 1/2 oz lemon juice and 1/2t simple syrup - although I'll admit dropping the sugar cube in last is a nice piece of theater.

We love the gin version - properly made they are exquisitely dry and elegant, however we've found the other "original recipe" - ie Brandy or Cognac instead of gin to be more popular with crowds. Champagne cocktails in general and French 75s in particular have been very popular with the ladies at our parties

I've had 44, but only a few of them in a bar.

I think this is useful, there are lots of times when I wonder what to try next.

I believe you'll find that the ones that Hemingway drank were sugarless, which I'm guessing was one of the reasons for adding the maraschino liqueur.

Cocktails and Spirits with Paul Clarke: Cocktail History, Revisited

The 2004 edition was incredible. Some day when some historian looks back at the current cocktail renaissance I think the first (2004) edition will be one of the milestones. For me, it was the second key book - building on Paul Harrington's 1998 Cocktail: The Drinks Bible for the 21st Century which might have been the book that made the Aviation famous (again).

The postman is bringing the 2009 edition to me, I check the mailbox every day .... Cocktails at 80

Time for a Drink: Ramos Fizz

first, yes, it is a fantastic drink - Queen of the egg white / fizz drinks in my book.

I'm impressed with you folks who shake. I could see doing this for one drink, but for any more than that, I use a blender - blend for a couple of seconds without ice, then add some ice and blend some more. One of the forums I'm on recommends using a milkshake type mixer - or a stick mixer - I haven't tried that yet. Cocktails at 80
