Healthy & Delicious: Lemon Basil Pasta Salad
Can this be made in advance? or will the chiffonade turn an unappealing black?

Fregola, a wonderful toasted pasta or perhaps a grain from Sardinia where it's traditionally made with tiny clams. I've cooked it like rice (using stock) and then finished it by sauteing in butter and adding sauteed mushrooms.

Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully
Not churros; not so easy if you're new to making them. Also, they taste best when freshly made and still warm, maybe not possible at a BBQ.

Just to let everyone know I emailed the hostess told her I was not comfortable making something I'd never made before (worried that it wouldn't turn out) so I said I'd bring my tres leche cake that I had made before and I hoped would fit her theme. She said great, thanks. I brought it, it was good, all the food was good and we had a good time. The best part? There were tons of kids at the bbq who loved the cake and even the hostess said it was prob better than spicy brownies.
Thanks for all the posts btw. Very entertaining.

Don't let "hostess"'s lack of consideration get to you. As others have mentioned, maybe she's self-involved, or incompetent & the party is overwhelming her.
In any case, promptly (within 24 hours) reply that "her suggestion was interesting" (or whatever wording makes it clear that you don't take orders from her, yet isn't confrontational). And, you're sure you can figure out something to fill out the dessert table by the weekend.
Then, make or purchase something nice. Please don't denigrate yourself with the temptation to be stingy or uncooperative. There's gonna be others at the BBQ who are probably lovely people who maybe are completely unaware of the hostess' clumsiness. Enjoy them, and yourself. GL

mayo is the backbone of our marriage. one of the first times my wife-to-be and I went shopping , the grocery store had Hellmans on sale buy one , get one. as she picked up 2 seemingly enormous jars of mayo, I'm thinking about how long it takes to go thru that much mayo & I said how do you know e'll be together that long?since then we have never run out of mayo!
Healthy & Delicious: Lemon Basil Pasta Salad
Holy yum. I used this basil and lemon principe in a hot pasta dish last night with sauteed chicken, steamed broccoli and crushed red pepper. It was great, and not as overwhelming as a full pesto. Lunch today was the small amount of leftovers with some thinly sliced zucchini.
I'm impressed at how versatile this recipe is. Next time I'll try it cold with shrimp and tomatoes.
Thanks again!

pthom appears to suggest we should just go to google rather than ask fellow board members about cooking issues. Close the site. Google has it covered. [Sarcasm alert.]

8537b, you could combine everything but the basil, and then add it in right before you serve it.

Just had a sweet chili sauce from Trader Joes and it is amazing. I put it on anything asian and even on a cracker with a little cream cheese.

I just had almond champagne and I loved it! This will be making a re-occuring appearance in our home!

For me, just the combination of shrimp and cheddar, more than any food in particular. I always thought seafood or shellfish + cheese sounded like a pretty unappealing combination, but I've been reading Kenny Shopsin's "Eat Me" and he has an open-faced sandwich in there with shrimp and cheddar, and it's unbelievably good.
Oh, and here's a pic I took of the sandwich:

Really, just surprisingly excellent.

Potato chips. They're slices (aka "chips"), of a tuber called a potato. Sliced moderately thin, deep fried, and generously sprinkled with salt. Truly delicious.
They came with my lunch today. Another exotic concoction called a "grilled cheese sandwich". I haven't figured out what it's made of yet.

@toasteebagel, I love Great Harvest Bread! While I'd take crusty homemade bread over GH anyday, as far as sliced bread goes, it's hard to beat. Their Honey Whole Wheat is my favorite, but Apple Cherry Pecan and Cinnamon Raisin Walnut are also amazing, and I had a sample of one of their breads that I think had Asiago cheese in it, which was also very good. And there are so many more flavors I'd love to try that are on their site but I haven't had a chance to eat yet (Pizza? Spinach Feta? Mediterranean Olive? Mmm...).
@therealchiffonade, I am so jealous. Homemade cavatelli sounds fantastic right now.

We joined a CSA last year and were exposed to a couple of new vegetables. Garlic scapes and pea shoots were among my favorites.
Found a fromagerie in Green Bay, Wi which had the most amazing, mild-salty crunch rind and rich, smooth, tangy, buttery interior. It was from Spain. The name escapes me, the the memory will remain forever.
Our new discories and cook dabbling is with grains. We'll be trying kasha tonight. Have to let you know how it goes.

@Noxturne: I am so with ya on that Cucumber Vodka, tried it recently and it was good. I also like Pomegrante Vodka with sprite. Then again, I like any kind of vodka with sprite. Always seems to produce pleasing results.
@SueZee: You took the words out of my mouth-well sort of. I do not like fish except shellfish; however, I tried Butterfish and was glad to be sitting because if I wasn't I would have fallen to the floor. Talk about *SWOON* WOW. From what I understand, Butterfish is black cod but it's made Hawaiian style. I tried this at a restaurant called Roy's and I wanted to order 17 dishes. I have been dreaming of having this dish again since the beginning of February. I can't believe I love a fish dish this much. It's insane. I think I am going to have to order the fish online and have it delivered. It's the only way I am going to get it I think.

I've become obsessed with Great Harvest Bread in the past few months. It's soft, full of flavor, whole grain, and unlike my crusty home-made (which I also love). Their Spinach Feta and High-Five Fiber (w/ millet and flax) are my faves.
Roasted Tofu is also 'amazing' marinated in ginger, teriyaki and garlic. Just until it's a little crispy...perfection alongside some roasted zucchini.

The best, the VERY best fish I've ever had was served by my sister in Alaska in a fish taco. She's an amazing cook, but this fish...Black Cod cheeks! Hardly ever or maybe never, found in a store as the fishermen keep them for themselves. I dream about that fish......

Raw milk. It's the best milk I have ever tasted. I tried to skim off the fat to make butter, but I didn't have a good vessel to put it in to do that. I made good pancakes as well.
