No thanks for the eyeball, but I'd love to try the head. It's all pork skin and fat what's not to love?! Lamb neck looks amazing too.

Best Empanadas in NYC?
PS - Mama's Empanadas is listed in the Empanada Rundown. This place, IMHO, is bad. There are a number of locations. Everything is frozen.

Bolivian food has something called the Saltena. The corn meal crust is baked and thicker, and crunchy and slightly sweet and the fillings are chicken or beef in a heavy stew form with hard boiled egg inside. Maybe it's only similar in appearance and concept but it's definitely worth checking out.
The only location I know of is "Reaturant Internacional (aka Mi Bolivia) 44-10 48th Ave between 44th and 45th streets in woodside. On the weekends they have a peanut soup which I've yet to try but sounds so unique I can't wait.

Downtown Bakery, Not Really a Bakery But a Decent Mexican Breakfast Joint
Anyone who hasn't made a trip to Woodside should not be allowed to complain about tacos in NY. I will definitely hit this up tho when the trip to 75th and Roosevelt doesn't happen. Tacquria Coatzingo FTW.
Off the Beaten Path: Cemitas at Taqueria Coatzingo
I've only had a cemita once and it was at coatzingo, mine was with cecina. I love cilantro but ended up pulling out the papalo, it just wasnt for me. Maybe on something else. I'm heading back to coatzingo today. Cant wait to try another filling.
Burger Thing: The Fifth Third Burger
this is the opposite of what I want in my burger. But I would definitely try it, for posterity.
The Best Steak in NYC Might Not Be in a Steakhouse
Peasant has a FANTASTIC T-Bone.

Why bother with the pig's eyeballs? Because they are DELICIOUS. I just want to emphasize that - the meat in the socket was extremely tender and gelatinous, like a braised trotter. Soooo....that's WHY :)
I don't want to get into bugs and testicles right now, but I have very similar sentiments about those as well! More on that some other time!
FergusStock at The Breslin
I'm sure pig's eyes are edible, but why bother? I know I'm man enough, but I just don't see the point of testing our mettle by eating bugs, eyeballs, Fugu, or boars testicles just to prove that we can.
That said, April made us an awesome dish of cod sperm at John Dory, and we loved it.
The Best Steak in NYC Might Not Be in a Steakhouse
just enjoyed the ribeye at momofuku, they actually offered the possibility of 16 oz for half the price - just tonite - we were very lucky. It was very very good. I had better, but it was excellent.
also worth while the pistachio ganache dessert. strictly for one person tho.

Burgers at a cocktail bar? You can't expect that to be anything but disappointing.

if it's too dark to read the menu
it's probably too dark to really see what you're eating
Do Hamburgers and Cocktail Bars Mix?
I agree re: D&C. Meh. Pretentious. Overpriced. Dark and uncomfortable.

@ roboppy: Bring Kathy and I along and we'll cover you on just eating a burger; we'll take a drink with some food.
The Indian Mangoes Have Landed at Patel Brothers
I have bought a case of alphonsos from Patel Brothers in Schaumburg,IL over this weekend. I have to say I am very disappointed with the quality and size of the mangoes. So far all the mangoes have rotten spots inside. I dont know if my experience is an isolated one
Best Empanadas in NYC?
Even though it's frozen and a bit commercialized, i would disagree on Mama's Empanadas being bad. You just have to order the more popular ones. The Hawaiiana or the Cuban empanadas are great. You will be very happy after you try the guava and chees empanada...

Burger Thing: The Fifth Third Burger
Skyline isn't proper chili.
Burger Thing: The Fifth Third Burger
Cincinnati chili is great. I don't know how well it goes on a burger since it would be the dominant taste, but Skyline is good stuff. I wish that burger was a little more conventional, it looks pretty cool otherwise.
Burger Thing: The Fifth Third Burger
I'll withhold judgment on the burger, but what is with the Skyline hate on this thread? Skyline is the food of the gods.
The Best Steak in NYC Might Not Be in a Steakhouse
I always wanted to dry age my own steaks and try to match the fine steakhouse quality and taste at home without paying a lot.
Dry aging steak adds a fifth dimension to the taste of beef, it can not be replicated with ordinary wet aged steaks.
Recently I found a product that I can use to dry age in my fridge without the mess or odor. It is a plastic bag that allows moisture to come out and still keeps a vacuum. Sounds unbelieveble, but it works.
I vacuum sealed a ribeye into this bag and placed it on wire rack in a fridge and aged it for 2 weeks. Took the meat out of the bag and was totally amazed, it had a dry crust that I trimmed off, same as out of these dry aging rooms at Smith and Wolensky. The steaks are tender and flavorful.
Very impressive.

Ooops. I take back my previous bitching about price. Didn't see that these were 32 oz portions. Enough for 4. The price seems about right!
