Where to eat, restaurant recommendations, dining advice and tips.

Hyde Park, London

I'm going to London for work, never been before and am traveling alone. Anyone know where I can eat a nice cheap lunch and a moderately priced dinner. There is a restaurant in my hotel, but I don't want to sit alone at a stuffy hotel restaurant.
Also, does anyone know of any grocery stores around Hyde Park where I could buy some snacks and drinks, hotel does not have a shop.
Thanks for any suggestions.

A Minor Breakfast Ban in Baltimore?

From the story on Baltimore's ABC2's web site: "Currently, businesses are not allowed to wait on students unaccompanied by a parent or adult from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on school days or risk a fine of up to $500 fine. The bill proposed by Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke would start the ban at 7:30 a.m." Supposedly, students are getting to school late because they're getting their breakfasts too late. I really wonder what percentage of students are affected. But more iimportantly to me is to agree with the merchants, in that this is a family issue and should be dealt with as such. Besides, is there a clause for homeschoolers? Anyway ... your thoughts?

Best independent burger in NYC?

I am going to be in New York for a week in may and would love to try out some good burger joints, somewhere independent ideally, any ideas?

Is there anywhere good to eat in Boston?

I used to live there about 6 years ago. Going back next week for work, and would love to eat well. Not interested in run of the mill stuff, which I remember Boston excelling at, such as crappy Italian red sauce joints, fried seafood and chowder shacks, or lame roast beef sandwich places. I am not looking for pizza, ice cream or burgers either. I'm looking for exceptionally good, inventive and refreshing food. Something on the same creative level as Momofuku, but not necessarily fusiony. Boston is so stodgy, I'm dreading this trip. I know there's got to be something good there though. Sorry for the pessimistic tone, but seriously. Impress me.

Does anyone miss Escargot?

I yearn for the long lost days when restaurants served Escargot peeking out of their little shells inviting the challenge and theater of using that special little fork to remove and savor them (remember the scene in Pretty Woman?). With the return of true haute French cuisine I hope this classic will return. What long, lost traditions of fine dining do you most miss?

What restaurant would you bring back?

The thread on bringing a restaurant with you got me to thinking about the ones that have already gone away, and that we would like to bring back to life. I have one that I am sure is much better in my memory than it was in real life, but there was a restaurant around me when I was a kid that was like an old-fashinoed diner, where the servers had rollerskates and would even dance and sing on the table tops to certain songs. There was a jukebox and everything. And the food, as I recall, was decent, too. It was just a fun experience that I would really like to have back.

So, what would you like to bring back to life and enjoy again? And if you know, what happened to it? Was it a mom and pop that just wnet out after they got too old? Was it sold out to a larger corporate place?

My son turns 21 this June: a special way to celebrate?

My son turns 21 this June and we were thinking about a special way to celebrate. I was thinking about taking him to a really wonderful restaurant that has, perhaps, a tasting menu w/ good wines? (vs going out to a bar w/ his college friends....) We tend to live a modest, UWS-type life but fondly recall attending one party catered by Daniel years ago at which I truly came to understand the difference between the food we eat to live (though tasty) and food that is more than that: art. He has been cooking with his friends at school and think he will appreciate it. Suggestions? Where should we go? How would we arrange it? How much should this cost?

good food near St. Luke's Hospital on West 114th Street, NYC

A friend just had emergency triple bypass surgery at St. Luke's Hospital on West 114th Street and is now complaining about hospital food. Can anyone recommend restaurants near there with good (and healthy) take-out? He remembers from college days forty years ago a good Hungarian restaurant near Wien Hall. Is it still there?
