Why does my bread burn on bottom?

I am just a single fella trying to survive and learn how to bake and I am having a problem. I have made bagels and loafs of bread in my oven and they always burn or brown too much on the bottom. I use a oven thermometer and put bread pans or cookie sheet on the middle rack. They never brown on the top before browning or burning on the bottom. FYI, my oven is a standard electric. Any advice?
