Weekend Cook and Tell: A Bitter-Sweet Love Affair

I think it's fair to say that when it comes to February 14th, you'll find a mixed crowd of lovers/haters of the holiday. Regardless of where you fall in that crowd, we can all agree on an appreciation for food and any holiday that adds a reason to think a little more carefully about your menu (or to indulge in that box of chocolates).
Kate Parham, of The Washington Post, isn't big on sweet. But she is big on menu-planning. Parham suggests that readers incorporate bitters to balance their sweets on Valentine's Day. Each course would incorporate a bit of each, beginning with a salad - radicchio, endive and escarole for bitter - balanced with nuttiness from cheese and almonds, sweetness from oranges. The dessert round also followed suit - a chocolate budino with grapefruit cream and espresso crumbs.
