Cookbooks - What version is best?

So I've decided to 'gift' myself with one or two "after Christmas" cookbooks. I don't have many and usually get them from the library because of the expense...that being said...any reviews I read always seem to specify certain 'editions' e.g Joy of Coking, Silver Palate, etc. So if I want to buy a classic cookbook, what version of what book do I buy?
