Weekend Cook and Tell: Life Without Twinkies
Welcome to our Weekend Cook and Tell where each Wednesday we turn the pages of the food sections of various national newspapers in search of inspiration for a weekend cooking project. We hope you'll cook along with us and share your experiences, recipes, and photos here.
You'd have to be in a very dark hole or bunker somewhere to not have heard that Hostess is going under. You may not give a hoot, you may be mourning the loss of a national treasure, or you may just be laughing at their sudden increased value.
Junk food doesn't have to be junky if you make it at home. Jennifer Steinhauer published an article on recreating snack cakes, cookies, and chips at home. Even if a business has to die, it doesn't mean our love for the product does. In a "nostalgic haze," Steinhauer goes through the process of recreating her beloved Hostess snacks. Leading to this week's topic - what products are going by or have gone by the wayside that you have (or intend to) recreated at home to make up for their loss?
Share your Twinkie eats on Photograzing (make sure to include "Weekend Cook and Tell" in your submission title) and tell us about your recipes here! If you'd like to blog the experience, please leave a link in the comments below. You can now also pin your creation on your Pinterest board as well. Please use the hashtag, #cookandtell, and tag us, @Serious Eats in your pin's text.
We'll post a round-up of your ideas, recipes, and experiences the following Wednesday, November 28th.
