How do you pronounce vegan?

According to the Vegetarian Society it is pronounce either (vee-gun) or (vay-gn) by most people. They prefer the English version vee-gn. My Oxford dictionary, on the other hand, says (vej-an). My kids thought I was nuts when I said vay-gn instead of vee-gun.
