Oregon Truffles

I saw some Black Oregon Truffles at the Fresh Market today; they were stored in a plastic storage container with arborio rice...3 tiny ones (maybe the size of a marble or an olive) for $30.00. I have never had fresh truffles (but I love truffle flavored oil) so I don't know what REAL truffles actually smell like. I cracked open the container to check the aroma and their freshness, and I was kinda shocked...I was smacked in the face by a horrible odor comparable to that of a dead animal (not the earthy or musky scent I was expecting)...Is that normal for a fresh (uncleaned) truffle?
