Homemade Bread?

Made a loaf of something from Peter Reinhart's bread book and it came out pretty bad. He has all these asides about how it's a lot easier to make bread in a professional super oven BUT it's possible to recreate the hearth at home, a process involving heating a pan of water, misting the oven using a spray bottle, etc.

Still, it sucked, leaving me with the sinking feeling that you really can't make true, perfect bread at home.

Is that right?
