Friends and Serious Eaters, I am doing a little advance advice-asking: In August, I'll be turning dirty 30, and I'm trying to do it up right, just for me. For starters, I'll be running my first half marathon (in the Bronx!), and to celebrate with carbs afterward, I want to fill my belly with the best pancakes I can find.
Here's the catch: I don't want "fancy" pancakes. I don't want any ricotta in them; I don't want any fancy butter, syrup, or compote; and I don't want to eat them off expensive dishes on a white tablecloth. I want awesome, golden, fluffy, stick-to-your-ribs diner pancakes at a classic New York hole-in-the-wall.
For instance, does anybody know about the 'cakes at La Bonbonniere in the West Village? That spot's on the top of my "possibilities" list. Also, maybe Shopsin's? I've never been there!
You tell me, trusted local eaters: Where should I dig in to my birthday pancakes? You only have, oh, three solid months to weigh in. (What can I say? I'm a Virgo -- we like to plan ahead!)
Thanks (well) in advance.
