Chicken Juices Cross-Contamination, Fact or Hysteria?

All the cooking shows show the chefs washing their hands and using separate boards for chicken vs. other stuff, which is a good idea. But is it overly hyped? I started wondering if I should change my tongs after putting chicken on the grill and before taking it off, but at what point when I am turning chicken frequently? When I was young and stupid, which took up a good portion of my life, I never thought of such things and never got sick.
