Broiler Pans

I read this morning that oven manufacturers stopped including broiler pans with their products two years ago, though you can still buy them separately. I've been hauling one from house to house for 30 years only because it's the perfect size for my Christmas bar cookies. What made these a necessary accessory to an oven to begin with? Do you/have you broiled on your complementary pan?
