Sweet Potato vs Yam

My boyfriend and I got into a heated argument over what he purchased tonight. He called it a yam, insisting that it was a yam, and that the sign for it at the grocery store labeled it a yam. However, even with the textual cues, I still believe that it was in fact a sweet potato. I was under the impression that true yams aren't usually sold in the United States. Additionally, yams are rounder, larger, and typically brown with an orange interior encased in a thick skin while sweet potatoes are smaller, slim, and tapered at the ends, the skins are thinner, while being orange inside. I've already looked this up on talk, and found this article http://www.seriouseats.com/talk/2008/12/difference-between-a-sweet-potato-and-yam.html, but it didn't say anything about visual differences.

Please let me know who's right! I don't care if I am wrong, but now I've just gotta know!
