Pizza Topping Prices

Rather than continuing to threadjack a Slice post I thought I'd start a discussion on this.

Do pizza topping prices make any sense? Should a smattering of thin onion slices or a single chopped garlic clove add $3.00 to a pie that's already a hand made affair?

Here are some random topping prices from a place we frequent:

Olives..........$2.50
Onion..........$2.50
Sausage......$2.50
Eggplant......$3.50
Shrimp........$5.50
Broccoli.......$3.50
Chicken.......$5.00
Broccoli Rabe $5.00
Garlic..........$2.50
Pepperoni...$2.50
Spinach......$3.50

These are fairly typical 'round here; it's a basic (but very good) slice joint. The plain pies are $12.

I can understand a premium for some of the meats, but thinly sliced vegetables??

Is it a loss leader situation, so people who want a few toppings spend over 20 bucks for a pie? Do veggies have a premium because of shelf life and storage space? Or is it all just whatever the market will bear?

I for one would be more frequently inclined to order toppings if they seemed rationally priced.
