Changing recipes - How bold are you?

I'm making lasagna and want to add asparagus to my meat-based sauce. The only recipes I can find online are white-sauce (with scant tomatoes) only. Is adding asparagus a line not worth crossing? I'm usually adventurous with recipes, but can't afford to ruin this.
How often do you experiment/change recipes or simply create something entirely yours? Please share, so we can copy;-)
