Writer Diversity?

I've been reading Serious Eats for a long time and I've seen a lot of turnover of writers and some style changes. Thru all, there has been a lot of diversity, from ubergeek to fluff like Hannah Howard's series on waitressing and silly photos.

Lately that diversity is fading. The recent articles lack the personable zing and have a Dragnet feel - just the facts, ma'am. Heavy and dull.

Yesterday when I logged on one writer had 4 posts on the main page, 3 of the 5 photos in that slideshow thing up top. 2 of the recent columns on the right referenced his recipes and the "Favorite Recipe" at the top of the page was his, even though it posted shortly before. The page refreshed and the columns thing on the right changed, and that same writer still had 2 of the 3 columns promoted. That's a lot of one person.

Don't get me wrong. I look forwards to Kenji Alts posts. His sous vide articles were nothing short of brilliant. But when he writes salad recipes it makes me wonder where all the other writers have gone. What happened to the heathly writers who came from talk? What happened to the Almost Meatless column? Crisper Whisperer?

Of course there is turnover, but it seems poor Kenji Alt is taking on a lot of writing and many of his articles are very long. It's great to have one of those to sit down and chew on for a few days because they are usually so technical. Its nice to have some lite reading in between and some diversity of writer's.

You may be forcing Kenji Alt to churn out all of these articles because he is popular with readers, but after looking at the SeriousEats facebook and tweets, maybe popularity has to do with promotion. Look at how many Kenji Alts' articles are promoted thru facebook and then look at what other writers are seldom or never promoted.

Again, I appreciate Kenji Alts scientific approach and like his style. I looked forwared to them when they were weekly. But now the diet is too rich. I liked the lighter fare mixed in. Bring it back.
