What's up with the price of supermarket onions lately?

Until this year they went for about $.99 per 3 pound bag when on sale, and maybe $1.50 to $2.00 otherwise.

Now all I see is $3 and $3.50 for the same bag.

Ordinary old non-organic onions cost over a dollar a pound now? What's the deal? Was there some onion blight I missed?
