Lately I have noticed a few restaurants that don't have salt and pepper on the tables. A lot of these serve French food (price point making no difference) it seems to me, although the most recent incident was a new hamburger joint that serves gourmet toppings and duck fat fries. Otherwise, it is pretty much like any other burger joint with red plastic molded booths and bright lights. Fountain drinks and napkins only, no salt or pepper. I assume the chef/owner is telling us his or her food is perfectly seasoned and there's no need for shakers. But truth is, tastes are different and I would often like more salt or pepper. Not usually enough to ask a French waiter for a salt shaker. Maybe some of you have the inside story on the pride and prejudices of salt and pepper shakers in eateries.
