The Worst Thing I Ever Cooked....
Regardless of what I'm making, I treat every meal as if I'm a death row inmate and this dish is my last right.
Most of the time,I'd be pleased if it were the last meal of my life...However,we can't expect to be at the top of our game each night after a hard day's work.
The worst thing I ever cooked was a spinoff of Batali's "Pasta con le Sarde" (Pasta with fresh whole sardines). I was so excited to find fresh whole sardines,I truly thought I would blow my guests away. To make matters worse,I built up the meal to my guests by billing it as "the first time you guys probably had whole sardines (fresh) in your life". Big mistake....HUGE!
Most of the time,as my guests are taking their first few bites of any dish I prepared,it is accompanied by a "wow, this is great",or "mmm, what is this? this is goooood"....but no,not this time...NOT A PEEP for 10 minutes from a table filled with friends.
The silence at the table was deafening. I finally broke the silence by opening the discussion by admitting "this is the first time I've made this so don't feel bad if you don't like it". My dish was torn apart my these amateur foodies as if they were judging "Top Chef" meets "Iron Chef" meets "Chopped".
I wasn't insulted at all as I can take a fair share of negative feedback. However,I was even asked not to invite a few of them over the next time I plan on preparing that dish.....I was slightly humored by that request.
We're all guilty of cooking crap once in a while....What is the worst thing you ever cooked? I want to hear every nasty detail and please provide the recipe if it is one you got from a well -published source.
