Farmers' markets observations and questions

It seems to me that the farmers' markets in my area have more of the mass-produced items like tomatoes, beans, broccoli, lettuce, strawberries, stone fruits etc. I think the most exotic item I've found is okra--I have not even found heirloom tomatoes (but I found them at Von's - weird). I am continually jealous of the slide shows and stories of amazing finds at other markets. What's the secret? Are your farmers' markets similar to mine? Do you have to live in a big city to get the best selection? Do you have to live out in the country? I live about an hour east of Los Angeles so my markets may be considered more remote, therefore have more basic things. I'm curious to hear about other areas.
