Flashback to 1976: "The Day the UN Ate Country Pie"

While cleaning out and organizing some books and magazines, I came across an old issue of Rolling Stone magazine that I found a couple of years ago in my grandmother's dining room. It was the August 12, 1976, issue no. 219 with Bob Marley on the cover. I'm still puzzled as to why my grandmother had it tucked away, but hey, I finally got to flipping through it and found this interesting article, "The Day the UN Ate Country Pie" by Harper Barnes.
Delegates from 101 UN countries were among the luncheon guests in Nashville for an eleven hour celebration that ended at Grand Ole Opry.
The first line of the article grabbed my attention:
" 'I love hillbillies. I love country music and I love this ham!' trilled His Excellency Don Jaime de Pinies, the Spanish ambassador to the United Nations."
I also found the list of some of the food served at the luncheon interesting:
500 lbs. Tennessee country ham, salt and smoke cured
200 lbs. watermelon
4000 hush puppies
400 lbs. cat fish
Several tons of other Southern specialties
Thousands of Jack Daniel's mint juleps

The evening ended with Dolly Parton, Charlie Pride and others at the Grand Old Opry.

Just thought some of you might find this look into the past interesting. I tried to find a link to the original article in archives, but was unable to track it down. I did take a picture of it if you're interested, and it is on my Flickr page--you should be able to read it if you enlarge it.
