Asparagus from Peru? In the spring??

My mom and I were grocery shopping this past Sunday when she looked at some asparagus to see if she wanted to buy them and saw they were imported from...Peru. She immediately put it back. Now I can understand finding South America asparagus when it's not in season here (like the one Michael Pollan buys for one of his meals/experiments in The Omnivore's Dilema). But I thought it was in season here, and it's getting close to winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Don't you think they would use a more local source?

All of this left me wondering...has our food system become so decentralized that we are not only importing food, but importing food grown in places where it's currently not the season?

I thought there was a movement towards supporting more local agriculture that seems to be growing.

Anyone else had those moments in the produce section that makes you think...wow, that comes from really far away?
