Movin' Down South

I've pretty much lived in the Los Angeles area all of my life, except for a year long stint in Arizona. I'm spoiled when it comes to food, as there's always been killer Mexican food and sushi joints within walking distance and a number of really great ethnic restaurants that deliver late. Not only that, there are loads of farmer's markets, ethnic markets, and I've always had at least two or three great carnicerias within a five minute walk of where I live.

My boyfriend lives in a rural area in Alabama and because I know he'd hate living here in L.A., we're talking about me moving out there sometime soon. I've spent a lot of time out there, so I know It would be a huge adjustment on my part and though I have a million OTHER things to think about, the food situation is one of the first that comes to mind.

Have any Serious Eaters moved from big cities where all kinds of great foods are available, to some little town where the local market is 25 minutes away and the produce sections consists of a few sad veggies? How did you adjust? How did you remedy the lack of diversity?

I know the south has a lot to offer in terms of BBQ and soul food, but I don't know how I'll live without Mexican markets and authentic Mexican food, Thai, sushi, Greek, etc. Making it all myself is always an option, but will I be able to find the products I need for special meals?
