Welcome to the Weekend Cook and Tell. Every Wednesday we leaf through the food sections of various national newspapers to create a weekend cooking project. We hope you will cook along with us and share your experiences, recipes, and photos here.
Our inspiration this week comes from Grant Butler of The Oregonian. For the past month, Butler has decided to forgo all animal products in favor of a vegan diet, all the while blogging about his experiences Going Vegan. On March 1, Butler's month of vegan eating was officially through but he decided that the positive benefits of eating an animal-free diet far outweighed the allure of a perfectly cooked steak or a piece of crisp bacon. With energy levels up and weight down by an astonishing 12 pounds in a little under 30 days, it looks like Butler is going to adhere to his vegan diet.
For our challenge this week we are going to become Temporarily Vegan at least for a meal or two. Leaving animal products out of your daily cooking routines might pose a bit of a challenge but it's a wonderful way to expand your cooking repertoire and eat more healthfully. And of course, it's always fun to experiment with techniques and ingredients that you might not be familiar with.
Show us your photos on Photograzing (make sure to include "Cook and Tell" in your submission title) and tell us about your recipes here! If you'd like to blog the experience, please leave a link in the comments below. We'll post a round-up of your photos and recipes next Wednesday with a variety of your vegan creations.
