Marinating Meat in Lemon Lime Soda?

The other day I caught an episode of Grill It with Bobby Flay that actually took place indoors and had nothing to do with grilling; it was a nice change of pace.

He had a special guest on that taught him how to prepare her mom's Korean recipes, one of which was bibimbap. Though I've eaten the dish many times, I've never made it. I've decided to make it this weekend and will be following the Bobby Flay recipe.

I just came back from the corner store after purchasing a 2-liter of Sprite. According to the recipe, I have to marinate my beef for the bimbimbap overnight in the soda. This seems completely bizarre to me, but the woman on the show said it makes the meat extra tender.

Does anyone know if this is at all authentic? Have you done the lemon lime soda marinade? Does it affect the taste of the meat; does it actually make it more tender?

Thanks in advance!
