Weekend Cook and Tell: Pies Reconsidered

Welcome to the Weekend Cook and Tell. Every Wednesday we dig through the food sections of various national newspapers to create a weekend cooking project. We hope you will cook along with us and share your experiences, recipes, and photos here.

This week's inspiration comes from Sarah Karnasiewicz of the Los Angeles Times and is all about pies. But before you start measuring out cups of sugar and peeling those apples, hold on a second. This week we are going to tackle The Savory Pie. Just because Thanksgiving and Christmas have passed, we don't have to retire our pie plates. The chilly months of winter are the perfect time to bake, whether you decide to go sweet or savory.

Savory pies come in all shapes and sizes, from the British steak and kidney pie to the classic one-dish meal of shepherd's pie, the Italian calzone, and the Jamaican beef patty.

This week we want to hear all about your favorite savory pie recipes. Even if you've only made dessert pies, this is the week to explore pasties, quiches, pot pies, and empanadas. Anything goes—as long as it comes in some kind of a crust.

Show us your photos on Photograzing (make sure to include "Cook and Tell" in your submission title) and tell us about your recipes here! If you'd like to blog the experience, please leave a link in the comments below. We'll post a round-up of your photos and recipes next Wednesday with all of your cooking adventures.
