Monte Cristo advice?

Hubby loves Monte Cristo sandwiches and orders them whenever we see them on a menu (all of three times, altogether). I've decided to make them for his birthday dinner at the end of the month. I'll be going with ham, turkey and gruyere on the inside, a sprinkle of powdered sugar, but don't know what to serve with it. Maple syrup? Jam - raspberry? strawberry? blackberry? Being a weird Americanized version of Croque Monsieur means I'm having a harder time figuring out what "should" accompany such a monster. Thoughts/opinions, please?
