Microwaves in nice restaurants???
Last night my husband and I ate at one of nicest restaurants in our town. Now, keep in mind we live in a smallish southern college town, so I'm not talking Michelin-star quality; but, it is the kind of place that tries to focus on local/seasonal ingredients, prints the chef's name on the menu, and amazingly doesn't serve chicken fingers.
With school out of session it wasn't very crowded and during a lull in the music I heard a distinctive beep followed by what I could tell was the opening and closing of a microwave door. I joked to my husband, "I'll bet that's your bread pudding." He balked, "They wouldn't use a microwave!?!?!"
Seconds later his piping hot bread pudding appeared. It was delicious, but I couldn't fully enjoy it because I knew it had been reheated in a microwave.
I'm not naive enough to think every food I've ever eaten out was prepped and cooked start to finish just after I've ordered it, but is it wrong to hate the thought of my expensive food spending any time in a microwave? I've never been in a professional kitchen so I don't know if this is common practice. Is the microwave a legitimate pro kitchen appliance? Is it used regularly for certain things? Should I just suck it up, admit I'm a Luddite, and stop listening for beeps?
