The other day I was in the tiny "ethnic food" aisle of my local grocery store. I was in a rush and I quickly grabbed what I assumed to be jarred kimchi. I haven't had good kimchi since I was a kid and I'd go to my best friend Hee Joo's house and her grandma would feed me delicious Korean food. Hee Joo, on the other hand, always wanted McDonalds.
Anyhow, I was going to make these delicious Korean soybean sprout pancakes that called for kimchi in the batter and on top. A few days pass and I'm setting everything up to make these pancakes. I open the jar of what I thought was kimchi, grab a fork, and take a big bite ...
And then I threw up.
I can't explain the taste and texture of what I put in my mouth. It was so acrid and rotten-tasting. And slimy. And just all around gross. I finally got around to reading the jar and as it turns out I purchased fermented bamboo shoots. Apparently, my grocery store doesn't carry kimchi, but fermented bamboo shoots? Sure! Why not?
My question is two parts:
1. Have you ever eaten/cooked with fermented bamboo shoots? Why on earth would anyone buy them purposely and how on earth could you make them even slightly edible?
2. Have you ever eaten anything so foul that it immedietly turned your stomach? I mean, I watch Andrew Zimmern's show, but I didn't think some little jar from a local grocery store could hold anything that would make me throw up.
