Looking for veggie burger recipe
I'm looking for a great vegetarian burger recipe - something that will go well with traditional toppings - something that will satisfy me that I'm eating a burger.
Have tried a few recipes, and either find they've got too many vegetables (texture problem) or have too assertive a flavor that's non-burgerish. I'm assuming I would use onions and mushrooms. Bulgur? oats? lentils? blueberries? What do you use?

I'll be watching this because I'm interested in a good veggie burger recipe too.
Thanks for the topic lemonfair.

I am not a meat eater so I prefer my veggie burgers not to taste like meat. One of my favorites is on foodnetwork.com under Guy Fieri's recipes. It's called Morgan's (his sister) veggie patties. Take a look at the recipe to get an idea. There are a lot of ingredients in them. The first time I made them according to the recipe; the second time took out and added things based on what I had at home and what I liked. If you have a food processor, it is super easy. Throw everything in and chop it up!

After trying lots of veggie burger recipes over the years, I've found the ones made with nuts and/or seeds have a heartier mouthfeel than the ones that are just veggies or veggies + grain/beans.
Here's a template for one made with sunflower seeds -- could probably sub other nuts, add mushrooms for part of the carrot, etc.

I think the best veggie burgers I've have involved seitan and/or shiitake.

Alton Brown's Split Pea Burger looks pretty darn tasty.

Because I am a lazy vegetarian to mix up all those ingredients to make a burger, I lately go for Portobello Burgers and season the mushroom super well with grilled seasonings and use that as my patty.
I had them first at Wolfgang Puck's Cafe and I was convert from that moment on...

flavacrisp: The reviews under Guy Fieri's burger are so universally positive (rave, in fact) that I went and got the ingredients this afternoon, and will try asap. Didn't get artichokes - only a Tablespoon, and I don't otherwise use them.
Read an article in Yankee Magazine a few years ago about a store that added ground (bing, I think) cherries to its ground beef. Think I might try that in a veggie recipe too. (can't find article online)
But I'm still interested in more.

I have made a few different kinds now and my favorite so far has been the one from Guy Fieri. It's got a ton of flavor. Hope you agree!

So am I missing something or....?
Where's the Guy F's recipe?

The photo looks pretty appetizing too. I'm going to make two batches today - lots of leftover beans if you follow his recipe.
Unless I'm absolutely wild about these - as many of the commenters are - in the second batch I'm going to substitute mushrooms for the olives, eliminate the chili powder and cumin and use a little Bell's seasoning and soy sauce, and add some walnuts. Will probably add more onion too.
The commenters have said the mix freezes well, which is a bonus.

When I make a batch, I always freeze the extra patties individually in foil. The great thing about this recipe is that you can substitute any kind of beans, herbs and veggies you like.
