It's Over - What candy is left, and what will you do with it?
The doorbell rang once. Two kids.
We never get a lot of kids, but this is an all-time low. We've had more on weeknights when it was raining.
So I've got a bag of Reese's peanut butter cups, minus 2, and a bag of miniature peanut butter cups. I'll probably freeze the big ones. For some reason, I like 'em better frozen. And the little ones will probaby end up in cookies.
So how was your turnout, and what are you doing with the leftovers?

I had about 15 kids, much less than usual here too. There's a little bit of everything and it will go to my son, son in law and teenage grandson after Sunday Dinner

Great post, @DB. We had only three visits - a couple of axe murderers, a witch and a spider queen.
There is one full bag of Reese's + 4 left over from the first bag we opened. DH and I are not much for conventional candy, but my nieces and nephews are and their parents allow it. So I might save mine and bake them into cupcakes or something to put out on thanksgiving.

We bought 3 bags of Reeses....and the only ones that escaped were the ones that found themselves in our tummies. I can't believe there weren't any trick-or-treaters this year!! And I know there are still a few kids in the neighborhood!
I think I will be making brownies with some..freezing some to nibble on..and eating some for breakfast today!
machellebelle at 9:15AM on 11/01/09
We have half a big bag of fun size Caramilks left...not a popular street here, either :/ I'm thinking I'll co-op this recipe for turtle brownies (http://kitchenbouquet.blogspot.com/2009/03/pay-it-forward-turtle-brownies.html) and put a layer of Caramilks in the middle instead of the dulce de leche & pecans bits...

This is my first Halloween in this neighborhood, we had bought 3 bags of assorted candy and we ran out in about an hour, I had to run to the corner store to grab more.
I'm guessing it was something like 50-70 kids total. They were showing up in groups. This morning I'm left with 1 tootsie roll pop and about 20 hershey's kisses.

I am not a candy eater, but my hub and kids are HUGE sweeties.
Since yesterday (yes, Halloweeen night) they've already put a huge dent in what was left. I suspect the rest will be gone by tomorrow.
The two bags I have left I'll donate it to the local food pantry. What a nice treat, a little luxury for struggling families. (It would make nice stocking stuffers for St. Nick's.)

Lucky. The kids in my neighborhood, somewhere between 6 and 7:30, had not only taken all of my candy, but they stole the bowl as well. x_x
missvenuz at 10:22AM on 11/01/09
I've got 2 unopened bags left that I'll send in a care package to a friend of mine in Iraq.
finewinendine at 10:23AM on 11/01/09
We have a busy Halloween neighborhood so it was good. Made about 70 bags of candy and they're all gone. Still have a bowl full so 2 adults and one wee one get to have at it for awhile.

I had bought 180 single-serving packages of Oreos. We had a rush of 150 kids between 3:00 and 6:00 pm, but then it started pouring rain, and that was the end of it. What I don't eat myself, I will scrape off the icing, and use the cookies to make a chocolate crust for a coconut custard pie.
salpico at 10:47AM on 11/01/09
we had NONE this year! I'm thinking because of H1N1 scare??? don't know.
we bought 3 bags of candies (snickers, pb cups, kitkat bars) so it's definitely bad to keep them around.
similar to finewinendine's

There are mostly butterfingers left, and some milk duds. I will eat them.
FoodStuffs at 11:54AM on 11/01/09
bring in my leftovers: assorted tootsie rolls, tootsie pops, dots, reeses, snickers--will keep a couple of the Reeses and Snickers and bring the rest to work...
Italiancupcake at 12:06PM on 11/01/09
Will hide some in my bra drawer (it is the best stash place I have found yet!!) so that I can savor some over the next few weeks. I will also put some out for boys in the dorm.
PoorOldMama at 1:37PM on 11/01/09
I have about 7 mini Reeses Pumpkins left and one white chocolate mini Halloween Kit Kat.
No more mint 3 Musketeers or full-size pumpkins.
I got so many kids this year--loved it!
HeartofGlass at 2:06PM on 11/01/09
We have a whole bowl of assorted candy (didn't have as many trick or treaters as expected) and 2 unopened bags of Reese's Lovers (which I'll freeze). The bowl is on my kitchen island so we're kinda just picking through it.
caramel at 2:24PM on 11/01/09
We only had around 75 kids this year. Most years it's well over a hundred. We have some snickers, milky ways and peanutbutter cups that my husband will most likely take into work. The skittles and starburst I'll let the kids have...although it seems that I heard some wacky tale of Mario Batali making a sauce with starburst at some drunken bash in his early years...hmm.
dhorst at 2:52PM on 11/01/09
Y'know you don't have to scrape the insides of oreos off to make the crust unless you just want to.... Smaller here than usual, numerous groups of middle-school kids, more than average. We hadn't planned on being here at all, so I had to grab some stuff very quickly. Ended up with some 100-calorie bags of microwave popcorn at the end of giving it out, which puzzled some of the little ones but mostly pleased.
And how on earth did that bowl get stolen? Mine never leaves my hand when I open the door.
lemons at 3:29PM on 11/01/09
Frozen peanut butter cups are great.
We didn't give out any candy, so the candy we have we're consuming (I guess -- I don't eat much candy). We bought 5-6 bags of candy today since Target was selling them at 30% off, along with Halloween-themed napkins for dirt cheap. Sucks that they didn't have anymore Halloween themed Ziploc bags and Kleenex. We just finished off last year's stock of freezer bags a few weeks ago. :)

While we were leaving the house to walk our dog yesterday, a lady drove up to us in her van with her kids and screamed at us asking us why we and the neighborhood were not giving out Halloween candy. We ignored her and walked away.
A lot of the businesses were actually giving out stuff to kids. We saw kids walking in to bars and restaurants, coming out with chocolate covered pretzel sticks, cupcakes, and other treats.
Cassaendra at 4:22PM on 11/01/09
I gave out about 4 bags of candy. I have a handful of Reese's cups and 100 Grands. They won't last long enough to bake anything with them.
gingercookiewithlime at 6:00PM on 11/01/09
@lemons-
Thanks for your comment about the Oreo pie crust. I've never actually made one. I usually use graham cracker crumbs or crushed animal crackers mixed with one tablespoon of sugar for my coconut custard or key lime pie crusts.
I was concerned that the crushed Oreos would be too sweet unless I remove the icing. What do you think?
salpico at 8:55PM on 11/01/09
I don't worry about scraping the oreo filling either. I usually use the Nabisco Famous Wafers if I don't bake my own, but used Oreos when the store was out of the wafers and I couldn't tell the difference.
GrantK at 10:46PM on 11/01/09
Was anyone surprised by what candies were popular and which ones were not? At first I gave out my little treat bags, which had one of each (3 in total), then I allowed kids to pick 3 from the leftovers in the bowl.White chocolate Halloween Kit-Kats (dyed orange) went first, even before the peanut butter pumpkins!
HeartofGlass at 7:05AM on 11/02/09
I had bought a bag of snickers and a bag of necco wafers (I don't like the changes). At the last minute I was beat and decided to leave the light off - first time I've done that - but I don't get a lot anyway. So I'll eat them slowly over the next few months (really). The necco wafers are great for the glove compartment for a little unexpected sweet.
lemonfair at 7:13AM on 11/02/09
I've been fighting flu since Wednesday, so BF handled door duty. I bought about three pounds of assorted candy and we got maybe nine kids (at least half of whom were teenagers that somehow felt costumes and saying "trick or treat" was beyond them - aren't you just begging for candy at that point?). So we have a lot left. I told BF that when I'm healthy, I'll chop the Hershey's mini darks up and put them in pancakes. The rest we'll freeze or eat.
Amandarama at 8:31AM on 11/02/09
The leftovers from my three pound bag of Dum Dums should get me through the winter.
Fat free, few calories, long lasting, lots of flavors and without the chocolate guilt you could say I'm a "sucker" for Dum Dums :)
Uncle Dudley at 10:45AM on 11/02/09
Operation Gratitude.
Actually, I don't give out candy. I like to give out toys or some other treat, which has worked very well when the child is diabetic or otherwise can't have candy. This year, it was glowsticks.
But I bought a bag of candy corn at 50% off to make the Candy Corn Nainamo Bars to take to an event next weekend.

missvenuz: i nearly pulled a muscle b/c i laughed so hard at your comment-they took the bowl too? i am very sorry, of course, but that really struck my funny bone for some reason this morning. :)
@ pooroldmama: you almost made me pee my pants w/your bra drawer comment!
i'm telling you-it's a good thing that i'm alone in my office....
gastronomeg at 11:23AM on 11/02/09
I hate having so many leftovers, so since I knew that we never get a lot of trick-or-treaters at our home, I only bought one bag of Kit Kats, which I don't even really care for (OD'd of them as a kid), so I took the leftovers and turned them into some really nice chocolate cookies, made with *loads* of cocoa powder and sugar and crunched up (coarse chunks) Kit Kat bars. They turned otu pretty well, so I am happy, and my coworkers are now on a sugar high.
Traveller at 11:43AM on 11/02/09
I made brownies with whatever was left - cut into bite side pieces and placed on half the batter, then covered with the rest of the batter before baking. So you never know what you are gonna get!
flavacrisp at 12:09PM on 11/02/09
My nephew lives with us so he will be allowed to pick out his favorites, then EVERYTHING goes to the office with my BF and nephew. Period. End of story. End of temptation!!
therealchiffonade at 2:58PM on 11/02/09
Sorry - meant to add... We had a fantastic turnout and I saw every costume from Buzz Lightyear (with blowup wings) to a kitten, to a mummy and various ghouls and goblins.
I carved two pumpkins and the parents got the biggest charge out of them.
