Fish and Chips
I'm thinking of making fish and chips this weekend but the hubby doesn't like cole slaw...I'm at a loss as to what to serve with all that wonderful fried food and feel like it needs something to go with it...what would you do?? Thanks.

My hubby makes a spicy mandarin orange, cilantro and Sriracha salsa which is a great accompaniment to beer battered fish. He uses the canned, drained mandarin orange segments, a few healthy squirts of the hot sauce and plenty of fresh cilantro chopped up. Let it sit and meld for a while and dip the fish in that...so tasty and different. Spicy and sweet.
On a recent trip to London I discovered that the typical accompaniment alongside pub-style fish n' chips (besides the chips) is "mushy peas" -- which is exactly what it sounds like...mashed green peas. Not a big fan of that myself, but it's "authentic".

Tell him to make his own! LOL jk
Is it just "standard" coleslaw he doesn't like?
You could make some potato salad?
Dont' forget the malt vinegar!!! :D

Maybe and apple-fennel slaw or some steamed veggies with garlic and lemon. Something bright and light would be nice I think.

I always serve peas with fish and chips and tartar sauce on the side.

He actually does like peas...I just might do that with some nice fresh baked rolls. Thank you for all your ideas, much appreciated. :)

Mushy peas are the staff of life! Cook them well, with lots of salt, pepper and mint, then mash them into a paste. Looks awful, tastes great.

Pea salad with a light dressing of mayo and or sour cream with a little herbage, or even tartar sauce. finely mined celery and scallion/chives. No need to cook the peas, just thaw the petite frozen kind.

Mushy peas all the way, and don't forget that pickled egg!

I assume you are talking about German potato salad?
Would you care to post your recipe?

Something malty and tangy - chopped salad with a malted vinaigrette, or a salad of shoestring vegetables.
Simple cucumber spears marinated in salt water and spices makes a quick pickle.

@sammie - what do you use for a coating on your fish? Rice flour? tempura batter? I'd love to know.

@tusti...hubby only likes KFC coleslaw...and is not a fan of any potato salads...he's weird about textures...and just plain weird. LOL.
@lemonfair - I'm going to try the coating that Anne Burrell did on her show last saturday...a standard flour and beer type...and those double fried fries...can't wait.

Mushy peas are not mashed peas, but are in fact Marrowfat peas that are soaked and cooked until they become a thick puree. You can get them prepared in cans at some of the supermarkets in the international food aisle.

Also pickles are a traditional side dish (Onions,Dill )
