Another cookbook idea for PoorOldMama
Hiya-
We don;t have a private message board, so I'm posting here.
POM- another suggestion for your 11-yr, old niece.
Find one of those basic cookbooks, but one published the year she was born. Basic is still basic, but it might be cool for her to start her cooking quests at "the beginning".

@CJ McD--Yes, thank you for the clever idea. She is my baby girl not my niece and that is what makes her the best little girl in the world.

Well, hmmmm...how about a cookbook that's 100 years older than she is? The facsimile edition of the Boston Cooking School Cookbook is available, and the original was published in 1896, so that's pretty darned close. It's a good look back at how people used to cook, and one advantage is that you don't need any fancy equipment or ingredients. And no cans of soup.

dbcurrie - is that aka Fannie Farmer? I learned to cook with a mid-20th century Fannie Farmer, and it never failed me. Still use it a lot.

Fanny Farmer is a classic--love the fudge frosting recipe.
Another idea might be Sundays at the Mooosewood Restaurant. It's vegetarian and explores cuisines from around the world. Kind of a fun culinary field trip.

@lemonfair, that's Fannie Farmer's school. I've got an old original book that I'm keeping clean and safe, and a shiny new facsimile edition that I'm not afraid to get dirty. I've also got a more modern Fannie Farmer.
