What's your favorite food when drunk?

For me, I like pancakes and french fries, or french fries and vanilla ice cream, or vegetable fried rice, or ramen!

145 Comments:

Anytime I'm drunk I get a craving for hot dogs. But this is always after 2am, and not a hot dog shop to be found within staggering distance. Damn.

People who are very drunk should not eat. Choking to death or aspirating vomit is a sure way to end of up dead. Try to think of more responsible things to post. Smack

Is Jerzee serious? People who are very drunk should not do a lot of things, such as driving, but I don't think eating is one of them. I doubt there are very many drunken choking deaths each year in the United States, but hey- I could be wrong.

When drunk I love really comforting diner-type food: mozarella sticks, patty melts, fries, etc. etc. It's greasy and bad for you, but goddamn does it taste good at 3 a.m. when you've had too much bourbon.

I completely misread the question and wondered why you'd be drinking pancakes or french fries...

Subway pizza sub or nachos!

i'm with you on pancakes.

pancakes actually sounds like an awful idea to me.... i agree with the fried food thing - fries, mozz sticks, cold leftover chinese food, pizza.

in college after leaving the bars we would go to the pizza place and ask for "a slice with cold cheese" - they would give us a hot slice, with a handful of shredded mozz sprinkles on top that would slowly melt into the rest of the slice. mmm...

Definitely pizza. Maybe a hot dog with spicy ketchup and tater tots :)

greasy breakfast at a diner.
ramen's awesome too, but I don't have access to good late-night (early morning?) ramen here.

and bacon= hangover aid!
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/5118283/Bacon-sandwich-really-does-cure-a-hangover.html

In the college days, it was grilled cheese with tomato on rye or White Castle hamburgers with a vanilla milkshake.....

I don't eat a lot of Mexican food, but after I've been drinking, I always crave a chicken burrito a la suiza from Mr. Taco, which is thankfully open 24 hours.

I haven't been drunk enough times to have a "favorite food when drunk".
LOL

53rd and 6th Halal cart! Best drunk food in the world!

Yes eating while drunk is a favorite pastime of mine. I would say pizza or nachos. Although oftentimes when I used to go to the diner after being out I'd order greek salad. So good.

chicken fingers or nachos.

I am serious very. After you have given the Heimlich to someone very drunk who was shoving food down in their mouth and then choking to death you are very serious. Our friend was eating pizza with extra cheese and it the melty cheese got caught in his throat. Food for thought.

It kind of depends on the circumstances. If I'm at home, then Rosemary and Olive Oil flavored Triscuits topped with Saga blue cheese and pepperoni. If I'm out in the Big City and it's in the 2 am range, a sausage sandwich from one of the street vendors (like "The Sausage Guy" on Landsdowne St.) or we go into Chinatown. If I'm out locally, we get pizza or Chinese delivered after we get home.

Homefries from a greasy spoon, or ice cream. And I ALWAYS want a diet pepsi.

Chinese beef noodle bowl, and deep fried rock salt and chili tofu. I had this combination after a wedding reception and now I crave it every time I get tipsy.

From the neighborhood all-night greasy spoon: Double cheeseburger on pita with yellow mustard and lots of sliced dill pickles. And maybe some fried mozz sticks with a marinara dipping sauce. Plus a large sugary soda with Excedrin. Then water.

I wake up in the morning and see the yellow mustard stains on my fingernails and remember it all.

The more I drink the less I find myself caring what I'm eating.

Greasy meat is good, bread is good.

Mac n cheese with some weird add-in. Not sure why I need to be try out new combos when drunk...

Ramen or pho. Just like when I'm hungover. :)

Oh! And patty melts are great too!!

The pages rolling up and down are making me feel like I'm drunk. That said, usually eggs and homefries hit the spot.

hot wings, party mix (like Chex), salt and pepper chips...mmmmmmmm

subway

s-nachos (i call them "snatch-os" when I'm tanked)

cheese filled smokies

chicken courdon bleu

Deluxe pizza (easy on the cheese @jerzee - wow)

more beer?

:D

Late night trips to IHOP or Denny's!

Pizza, pizza, pizza! I'm in New York so there's a pizzeria on every other corner. I can never help but stop in on my way home from a night out.

It used to be grilled sausage in a hero when I had a different commute and would pass by this great sausage vendor by Grand Central. He always had a line late at night.

pizza duh! i think this was invented as drunk food. extra cheese, extra hot sauce, side of marinara.

i prefer to save the greasy stuff for the morning, i think it is the perfect hangover cure. favorite is...french fries, pancakes, and coffee (at a diner, duh)

my old roommate and i used to have this strange eating habit when we were drunk: come home from bar, make a crap load of brussel sprouts, drench in butter, inhale brussel sprouts, fight over last brussel sprout. wake up in morning and wonder why apartment smells so awful.

White freakin' Castle! Heaven when drunk. I also like greasy, fried foods, things you can dip in ketchup, pancakes, bready things. We have a place down here open only in the summer season that has amazing wings and is open 24 hours, so that gets a lot of drunken trips too!

Cheap frozen pizzas (e.g. Totinos Party pizza) or pizza rolls. Pizza in any form, really!

I adore roasted duck at the late night chinese food joint. Or a kebab. Every time I drink I get super hungry at some point... and all bets are off. :)

@Jerzee maybe if someone is THAT drunk that they lose control of their swallowing function, AND no one is around to save their drunk self, then they win a darwin award. Eating when drunk sounds like a personal choice (and necessity) to me.

lately, it's been a gyro or cheeseburger plus chicken nuggets, 3 pieces of fried chicken and fries from the 24 hour fried chicken joint on St. Nicholas ave. i never finish it, but that's the point; then i have leftovers for hungover lunch.

i love to stop and have a huge breakfast before i go home. someplace busy and filled with people i've seen all nite.

12-step programs on the house!

I was only down there once, but at 2 am in Faneuil Hall in Boston there were people out selling chicken kebabs, like satay but without the dipping sauce. And they were perfect.

I don't usually eat when I'm drunk (which often contributes to me getting drunk) but when I'm hungover I crave comfort food: mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, tuna casserole, saltine and peanut butter. I always give myself permission to eat bad food if I'm feeling like crap.

Pizza with a side of hot man.

Also, I do have to second @JerzeeTomato. I was an EMT in college (I drove an ambulance and provided basic life support), and I brought a kid into the ER who almost died choking on his vomit. I also got puked on by a girl who had been eating alfredo and drinking red wine... I needed a new uniform after that.

JERZEE, if I were to heed your advice then our whole Christmas dinner ritual would go out the window. By the time we've finished the afternoon nips of bourbon and gone through the bottles of champagne, and enjoyed a bottle of sauterne with the foie gras (a once-a-year treat), another white with the fish course, and moved on to the Bordeaux with the roast beef, you can bet that the whole family (all adults, that is) is DRUNK. Then comes the dessert wine, and of course the after-dinner liqueurs, and on a particularly cold and festive evening, a Belgian strong ale might come out to carry us into the night and visions of sugarplums in our heads.

And Christmas is the more sober holiday at our house. I can't even begin to describe Thanksgiving!

Why does "drunk" have to have some sort of repulsive and reckless connotation? We are DRUNK, not tipsy, not buzzed, not lightly toasted, and happy with how wonderfully food and drink work together, which is not all that far off from what the original poster was asking about.

Taco Bell, ramen, street food or an entire pizza. If someone is sober enough to drive, we're going to Taco Bell. If I'm wandering the streets of Japan, it's ramen. If I'm wandering the streets of China, it's street food. Finally, if I'm drunk and have no where to walk and no one to drive me, I want the greasiest pizza that will deliver.

White rice drowned in tamari. I've always reasoned that something über-salty made sense given that alcohol is a diuretic.

Pizza is the best drunk or sober. I'm also a french fries fan. Really anything greasy is pretty awesome when you are drunk. Although I do miss my Döner kebab. Soooo yummy.

Toodle House scrambled eggs with friends after the party was over. (The Toodle Houses are long gone. Alas!!!

anything greasy, salty, and most likely extremely unhealthy for me..

If I've been downing beer, I like salty, crunchy junk food, like chips, pretzels, or especially Cheetos. Wine puts me in a fancier mood, I guess, so crave anything rich and decadent, like chocolate cake.

i don't drink, but my favorite food after i've been smoking is any.

Definitely pizza and/or ramyun. Sullongtang at Gahm Mi Oak on 32nd is also a fav. Also you can't forget Hop Kee in Chinatown.

Be as drunk as you like. As I said People who are very drunk should not be eating. It is a choking hazard. No one said not to have wine with your dinner and I don't see how having wine with dinner could be considered being drunk.
Also if you are so drunk Lorenzo what does it matter what your eating? Could be your elbow dipped in butter will all taste the same.
Do whatever turns you on.

Tacos with extra hot sauce. Oh yes.

Salt + grease rules! Cheeseburgers are an excellent choice, though many similar choices have already been suggested.

Good god, who wants to talk about being VERY drunk?? I don't think the question was posed with that in mind.

just about anything 'bad'. mexican and italian for real food and anything when it comes to junk fook... hot dogs are always good, drunk or sober :)

More beer. I don't like to eat when I am drinking, I don't like the bloating.

Mexican most definitely. Anything with sour cream, cheese, beans, and meat. That is the perfect drunk food.

Anything that, when sober, I immediately know I shouldn't eat. Same rules for an impending hurricane. All bets are off.

too druk to cook rihgt nao hahaha. hmm not good. i shd go to bed.

Salt and grease. I am fairly certain that when I am drunk you could give me a plate of deep-fried cholesterol and a salt shaker and I would be happy.

Back in college, it was gyros. One bar that was two blocks from my house, shared it's men's room with a next-door gyros place. Very handy.

There are no gyros joints near my current favorite bar (my basement), so I have to settle for whatever's the most salty and greasy at the moment.

Breakfast! Eggs, bacon, well done home fries, and rye toast w/ lots of unsalted butter... always works for me.

Fried things or diner food (which yes, is often one and the same but not always) or Mexican. I also usually end up baking when drunk (I dunno, natural instinct? weird compulsion?), but never want to actually EAT sweets.

Jerzee, obviously there is a wide variation in how "drunk" a person may be after a given amount of alcohol. If a person drinks a glass of wine with dinner, that's probably not even close to drunk and not what you would likely consider a "choking hazard." If dinner ends up totalling about a bottle per person, I can attest to the fact that most people at the table will be drunk. It may be "a choking hazard," but people have enjoyed food and drink to this extent for centuries and will continuing doing so. Bring on the bacchanalian feasts!

LOL @ GirlFromJetCity > amen 2 dat

I haven't been drunk for 45 years! It was so bad, the "sobering" effects have lasted a lifetime. I still get queasy when I smell Gin and the thought of eating food in any proximity to being tipsy just literally turns my stomach. To each his own, I guess.

I live in Atlanta - the only true answer to this is the Awful Waffle (House)! ...and when in Europe, it's the doner kebap!

What a stupid, immature topic. Let's keep it on track with topics for people who truly love food, not those who are looking to avoid a hangover the next morning with greasy, crappy food.

@prncs79 - What a stupid; immature comment.

68 Comments from people who love food in general.

Your comment on "Ideas for a restaurant tenderloin dish?" just demonstrates your pessimistic communicaton skills and poor attitude.
I bet you're a very friendly foodie....

Have fond memories of Mexican combo platters, breakfasts at 2:00am (eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, pancakes or toast) or sub sandwiches.

But pretty much anything would do, basically to minimize a hangover.

(It is kind of a dumb topic. But you see, I've jumped in feet first too. *guilty*)

Two Thomas English muffins - toasted to be perfectly crisp with lots of melted butter. One with jelly and the other with peanut butter.
Eaten standing up in the kitchen of a frat house at 2am - nothing better in the world!

Looks like I might be the only "health nut" here, but my ultimate drunk food is a bowl of nutty granola with milk and crunchy almond butter drizzled on top.

@andrearode
*pats on back*
wowza! when Im endulging in intoxication its (one of) my only reasons to justify unhealthy selections.
you should be proud!

Tonkotsu ramen

Fries with mustard, ketchup, black pepper dust, and malt vinegar. Got this at the kebab truck once in England and never looked back.

@natamari You officially win for being drunk at 9:11 AM.

I'm from New Orleans, and yes, we do love Po-Boys late at night when drunk (assuming you can find them). The thought of getting a po-boy from a gas station might sound horrific to most, for some reason I'm quite fond of Danny and Clyde's po-boy (late at night). The best kind are roast beef. Or really anything with gravy.

So yeah, New Orleans or not, Po-boy or not, anything with gravy is delicious at any time of day or night. But if you can swing it, poutine pretty much hits the spot.

White Castle!! Or, if I can't find a sober driver to get me to the Castle, a fried egg sandwich at home--bacon, egg over easy, cheddar, tomato, mayo and avocado, if I'm lucky.

Buffalo wings!

Spaghetti carbonara with loads of parmesan and cracked pepper - made at 3 a.m. - somehow the clumsiness makes it more tasty. Accompanied by a gigantic, icy glass of soda water with a slice of lemon. Seriously - sometimes even saves you from a hangover.

Sliced sourdough bread. Toasted. Buttered. Smeared with a little cream cheese. And topped with cold, store-bought salsa.

Jerzee, please stop being Foodie Falwell.

In Echo Park, at the bottom of my hill right between the Little Joy and the Shortstop bars is a hot dog cart. Big hot dogs wrapped in bacon topped with onions and mustard. Omnomnomnom!!!

Oh my goodness, cheesy-gravy chips from a truck. Never would think of touching them but on my way out of the clubs I cannot resist. Then when we get in home friends usually come over for tea and biscuits before calling it a night!

did anyone read fuschia dunlop's shark's fin soup and szechuan pepper? the saturday late night post clubbing street snack of choice in the little village where she lived in china was stir fried rabbit heads.

i think my cravings are generally an attempt to lower the alcohol's affect. things like starches to give my body something else to process. french fries, bread sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, tortilla chips and salsa. i dont know if its a conscious effort or not, but when your body says jump, its a good idea to ask how high because its usually self-policing.

Fat and salt. French fries, mac and cheese, grilled cheese, greasy burgers, greasy omelettes, hash browns (shredded), etc. Sweet stuff when I'm drunk just makes me queasy.
I have been known to make and eat an entire box of Kraft mac and cheese post-imbibing. With Tabasco sauce on top. I'm feeling hungover just thinking about it.

@prncs79: I'm curious to know why this is an immature topic! It's a very REAL question....people do drink and whether intentionally or not, some do get drunk and most people tend to eat afterwards!

You found the time to post your ignorant comment so apparently this topic wasn't too bad!

At The University of Mississippi (aka Ole Miss) we eat chicken-on-a-stick from the Chevron station near the bars. It's hard to park there after the bars close because the parking lot is so packed with hungry drunks. It is so popular that our student paper would track how many chicken-on-a-sticks (yes, that is the plural) were consumed on game day weekends and it would be in the thousands. Sound gross? Don't knock it til you try it.

Potato chips, potato chips, potato chips!

@julian - i'm in australia so it was past midnight when i posted that... :) and i was *trying* to cook spicy korean instant noodles/ shin ramyun but couldn't get motivated enough to get up.

greasy is not enough for me, it has to be spicy; spicy potato chips, fried potato wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli sauce, spicy ramen, spicy doner kebabs ... i don't know if it's the carbs or the sweating, but usually i get sober pretty quickly after. and i'm a very cheap drunk - 1 standard drink!

Cheese Fries. I hate to say it though, its gotta be with wiz.

Cincinnati chili- a three way. oh man....best drunk food ever.

I was previously unable to comment because it had been so long. But my memory was refreshed last night, and salt and vinegar potato chips (with some barbeque ones thrown in for variety before they disappeared) really hit the spot.

To Jerzee -
People choke on food all the time - and I'd bet it's more often sober than drunk. Little kids and old people alone must have the majority - should we starve them? Lighten up. Have a beer - football's on.

Bacon Cheeseburgers (plural!).

I find any combo of pasta and tomato sauce is perfect - spaghetti, lasagna, mac 'n cheese with a serious tomato salsa and/or a ton of ketchup. Pizza works too.

Not that I disagree with a lot of suggestions above - breakfast at 3 am works for me, hot dogs, Canadian-Chinese food (no lobster or crab - just fried rice, sweet and sour whatever, noodles, etc.) are all great. And I like the peanut butter on an English muffin, although that's usually for the hangover next morning.

Pizza from my local, late night, main street place. It's thin crusted, greasy, and so gooooood. They make the best white pizza with garlic and basil and ricotta, and with a side of their delicious marinara it is a frequent craving for me, drunk or not. My friend's mom makes awesome drunk snack food, like veggie pizza- the kind with cream cheese, broccoli, carrots, red pepper, etc.- and seven layer dip.

@sawyerriley Is it as good as Penn's chicken on a stick?

jj's chicken friend steak with extra orange gravy!!!! gross normally but at 3am its divine! anyone that's been to the oxford in missoula,MT knows!!

Those greasy tacos from Jack in the box if we have a d.d.around. Or else it's something that can be microwaved in case some one passes out. I don't like uses the oven or stove when i'm a bit tipsy or smashed.

To be completely honest: bananas. And no, that's not a euphemism for anything...

Definitely pizza or the oversized amaaaazing chicken fingers from the 24 hour place on my college campus. Oh college, how I miss thee.

i don't eat too often after drinking as i am much more interested in going to sleep but every now and then the little angry bear in my stomach forces me to eat and its usually a slice of pizza, chicken fingers or disco fries (fries, mozz cheese, brown gravy, a take on the canadian poutine) at the diner. if i am home, fried rice or nachos and a few advil for the morning!

Been awhile, but I was and still am, an omlet person. So usually I would get a Denver omlet. And eat the entire thing! Wanted to soak up all the alcohol and then be able to maneuver into whatever I was going to be doing next! Add a bit of Maryjane and I will also add peach pie to the mix!
Gosh, I was a wild child in my 20's!

I really like deep fried cauliflower. And my local place has this pizza with gorgonzola that is good.

The hangover food is veggie lo mein. I don't really know why.

MCDONALDS -- I am such a bad drunk eater, I eat more than any person ever should. My favorite is cheeseburger/fries combo.

In college we were huge on ordering Chinese food-- crab rangoon in particular. Also loved fried chicken fingers in the dining hall dunked in honey.

After college, lived in the North End in Boston and frequented Bova's 24 hour bakery-- so it was huge arancini and mini calzones. They were disgusting.

Also in college, veggie corn dogs. Sounds disgusting, was amazing.

White Castle or a Denny's Grand Slam or Taco Bell. I am always the designated driver, but these are the places that we always seem to hit on the way home.

Dim sum. No really. When I lived in New York there was an amazing place in Flushing that served dim sum from 10a-4p and from 10p-4a and after drinking and listening to Irish music at the pub around the corner we'd all pile onto the subway and head out to Flushing. Now that I live in Michigan I do not have that option and it makes me sad.

Biscuits & Gravy with a side of Fried Potatoes @ a greasy diner. Make sure the table or counter has plenty of hot sauce, salt & pepper. This sounds so good I feel like getting loaded right now!

I crave Jack In The Box when I'm drunk; specifically a Sourdough Jack. But I also usually crave fries, onion rings, spicy ramen, udon, and fried rice. I tend to avoid dairy things (except cheese) when I'm in this delicate state and go for greasy, fried, or spicy confections of goodness.

Grilled Cheese with peanut butter and bacon.

Ok, for all of those Southern Californiaites, you know what I mean when I say Tommies chili fries, extra cheese, with or with out onions. And if you aren't near a Tommies, of course there is always Dennies big egg breakfasts with eggs, bacon, sausage and the requisite pancakes. Does a body good. Personally, I think its all in the gease and the carbs. One to lubriicate and ease it out of the system; the other to absorb the alcohol before it does too much damage. However, since I am in Az and it's been years since I've been close to that state of craving, Thomas' english muffins toasted perfectly with home made apple butter butter works for me .

popcorn, drunk or not drunk, it's my favorite snack!

french fries and fresh mayo. mmmmm.

oddly enough its slimjims as well as chili... i know so weird but delicious

I am a salt freak...so, pretzels dipped in celtic grey sea salt.

Gyro and BBQ fries = best late-night food. McDonald's fountain coke = best morning-after drink.

My favorite after bar crawling in San Francisco was to stop at Bob's diner on Polk Street and get the worlds best Monte Cristo with twice-cooked fries. I've never found one like it anywhere...and I've looked!

For a few years it was Mac&Cheese, or Ramen. But anything with grease and some carbs. Denny's omletes are great, and potatoes any style, also agree with the fried rice and chow mein or lo-mein.

Doner Kebap! I am convinced this is the worlds best drunk food.

And french fries, definitely. All it takes is one or two drinks and suddenly I want french fries.

But, if I am hungover...then its scramby eggs and homefries and bacon. mmm.

Doner kebab meat on french fries with cheese and chili sauce over the top. A Glasgow heart attack classic! You feel it in the morning though...

Funny Bones and chocolate milk - those are my must haves after a night of drinking. Unless the group is going for breakfast - then i'm in!

Chili Cheese Fries from the Fleetwood Diner in Ann Arbor, Mi is my all time favorite post drinking food. Pizza or Taco Bell works if I'm not able to hit the Fleetwood.

Cheesecake bites from Taco Bueno. Then french fries with ketchup from Whataburger.
Take any pretentious foodie, get them drunk, and they won't know the difference from foie gras to Big Macs

I'll eat anything that I don't have to cook myself. Or wait a long time to eat. Fast food is definitely high on the list. Pizza, burgers, hot dogs (I have to be REALLY drunk to eat those), french fries, tacos, nachos....Mmm mmm mmm.

Do drink garnishes count? :-P

Dynamite Yaki from Go on St. Mark's in the East Village.

If someone said "wings" then I missed it.
WINGS! WINGS! WINGS!

Doner kebap on a toasted baguette with loads of mayo and french fries.
And pad thai.
@GirlFromJetCity - couldn't agree with you more about the side of hot man.

It's strange no one's mentioned Montreal's poutine. It's the best food for a hangover -- the starchy French fries topped with cheese curds will help you sleep like a baby. When the bars start closing in Montreal, restaurants serving poutine are absolutely packed!

Has no one heard of a garbage plate? i think it originated around rochester, ny.. best drunk food. ever... basically its a giant plate with either two hamburger patties or chicken fingers, french fries or homefries, mac salad, bread and covered in chopped onions.. you have to drench it in ketchup, mustard, salt and pepper.. its amazing...

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31625280&l=0b694a8f5b&id=8102742

oh and there's chili on there too :) numnum

Cheese fries with feta dip from The Grill in Athens, GA (open 24 hours, and they don't mind my drunken revelry!) or animal style from an In N Out. Although I'm pretty sure everybody likes about anything from LaFonda dogs by the UGA library, in terms of nasty-ass street food. I'm nursing a gin and tonic right now, and getting absolutely ravenous reading your posts!

When I was in Korea, the food trucks with the spiciest dukbukki were the best...the raging heartburn the next day, not so much

katerine, if i had the ingredients to make poutine at home, i would! i would have to drive to dysarts restaurant and, well, i would be drunk, *sigh* i wish they delivered.

I don't know that it's actually considered food, but I can kill some Taco Bells after having a few "pops". Grease is GOOD!!! LOL!!!

I don't get drunk anymore, but after a few drinks, if there is cold fried chicken left over, it's gone! Dave

Whataburger taquitos: bacon, egg & cheese (with picante) or a Philly cheesesteak. Depends on whether I am in Texas or NJ/PA at the time of said drunk.

Actually ANYTHING with a Side of Hot Man is good... drunk or sober!

This must be the dumbest question I've ever seen on this site. Get serious.

Days of college, days of youth, six parts gin to one part vermouth
