Any recommendations? - looking for local spots, not just the tourist thing in Disney.

Unfortunately, you're not going to find much in Orlando -- restaurant chain city!
I do have to give accolades to the Vineyard Grille at The Ritz in Orlando - John Young Parkway. The food is excellent, they cater to food allergies, and the service outshines everything. Norman's in the Ritz is also excellent, as is Primo in the Marriot (next to the Ritz).
If you want neighborhood joints, you'll need to venture away from tourist town.
Harmoni Market near UCF is excellent.
If you're willing to drive 10 more minutes outside of downtown, you'll hit Winter Park and the jackpot on independently owned restaurants with amazing chefs and amazing food.

Le Coq Au Vin. Have not been there but have heard good things. Best described as "country French". The most glowing rec was from a whole family of picky eaters. Everyone loved the dessert souffles. The only downside is that the outside of the building looks like crap.

i concur about winter park. its a lovely place for a walk and there are many very good little indi restaurants and bistros; you;re bound to find something you really like.
also for thai food i recomment Thai House on east colonial dr. doesnt look like much on the outside but has very good food and service and fair prices. its the first place i ever had curry years ago and i've been hooked ever since. royal thai on semoran is good too.

I went to Orlando in November of last year and bumped into Numero Uno Restaurant. I found it to be pretty good and my wife loved it too. Good Cuban fare, pretty cheaply priced, a nice setting.
Just park in front of the restaurant, I came out to find someone taking a piss on my car, or so he claims, I'm pretty sure he was about to break in.

Try Yellow Dog in Gotha. It was closed due to a fire when we were down there in April, but we ate there some other time that we were Disneying and enjoyed the the ribs. Very informal place and reopened not too long ago.
This last time we went to a Thai place. It was as WGD says. You will have to venture away from the traps. It might have been Thai House that we ate at and it was very good. It was in a strip mall.

The Chef's Table at Edgewater Inn in Winter Garden -- amazing!

Thanks all. Just finishing my time in Orlando. 2 places of note for anyone willing to get away from disney and the chain o'restaurants.
Rice Paper: Turkey Lake Road and Sand Lake - in a strip mall. Decor is minimal but the food is great and at a good price. Vietnamese fusion cuisine cooked to order by an older Vietnamese gentleman - he actually delivers each plate! Great selection - had crisp cornish hen, husband had hanoi noodles - rice noodles saute'd with chicken , shrimp and veggies.
Have been to Le Coq Au Vin a few times - always plan a trip there when I am here. Family run French/creole bistro. Great ambiance and exceptional food.
A local said Backwater BBQ - next door to Le Coq is really good, but has limited hours. Looks like a standing room only kind of place - aromas are pretty awesome. On my list for next time.
