Good heat-up-the-house ideas

Any suggestions for dishes that will take hours in the oven?

It's gotten chilly where I live, but since this is nothing compared to what we're in for in the winter, we've decided to wait until November to turn on the heat in our house. So, I'd like to kill two birds, so to speak and make something delicious while making it toasty in here.

What say you, dear SE-ers?

Can't go wrong with a nice thick pot roast with loads of whole garlic cloves in the cooking liquid...that's about 2-3 hours of great smelling warmth.

Mmm... beef brisket, a nice pot of Boston baked beans, soups, a roast chicken, or the aforementioned pot roast.

Braise a pork roast for pulled pork that you can use as carnitas or pulled pork sandwiches. It has been on special in the markets recently so it will save you $ and probably will provide two meals. I bought two for later in the year and froze it. Nothing like pulled pork in January to remind you of the coming spring and ribs on the grill!

what about a few loaves of bread? i always find that to be heavenly.

Sunday, I made a fantastic and rich meat and potatoes stew with a granny smith apple pie for dessert. Heavenly!! Nothing makes me happier at this time of year than cooking all day and feeding all my friends.

I can't believe you're waiting until November! I'm in Connecticut and I waited until October 1 to turn on the heat and I barely held on that long! Still, I keep it quite low (60-63), so my apartment is pretty darn cold. I made braised short ribs (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Braised-Beef-Short-Ribs-with-Root-Vegetable-Ragout-100597), which did a good job of warming the place up a bit.

In our case it would be opening the door.....

I made Spaghetti all Aglio e Olio on the Tomato Weekend Cook and Tell in July. It took ~3-1/2 hours to make, clocking in ~3 hours of oven time, and is a simple dish that I really enjoyed. I need to make tomato cake again...

@emgroff - We'll see if we can really hold off that long! It's pretty chilly out there. Being from a cold climate, I feel silly heating up the house when the temp's still above 45, since when it gets that warm in springtime, I'm practically in shirtsleeves. Fortunately, we also have a fireplace.

Thanks for the ideas! I decided to do a pot roast - but not a traditional type. I seasoned it with salt and garam masala and I'm braising it in cider and a little cognac in the oven for a few hours on 200 degrees. Hopefully it will turn out ok.

Let us know how the unusual pot roast turns out, please, yayfood. I am currently making a stew in the oven at 275 degrees, supposedly leaving it there for 8-10 hours - browned chuck cubes, canned chopped tomatoes and their juice, cup of fresh basil, 8 cloves garlic, tablespoon cracked pepper, red wine, covered tightly. It smells great, and is taking the chill off.

Peposo. Its an Italian dish that's simple, delicious and can take upwards of 15 hrs. to cook and is amazing.

@likeswords - It turned out great! Surprisingly not that different in flavor from traditional pot roast. I after 6 hours, I added chopped mushrooms, potatoes and a red onion to the pot to round it out.
