Give some lovin' to your oven! Dinner Thursday 10/8?
I am making beef with red wine and bulgur in the slow cooker. I will put that over some kind of noodle. A big salad and my 5 minute Artisan bread. Still trying to perfect that bread....tastes OK but looks pretty weak.
Brownie sundaes for the people--the scrawny people-not the me or the BigMan!

i've really no idea what we're having for dinner tonight. i made a vat of tomato basil soup last night, so dinner might be some of that and a salad. i might roast some turkey breasts that i already have in the fridge with a whole bunch of herbs and slice that up to put on the salad. we shall see what inspiration comes to me after i get home and have a glass of wine.

I'm using my slow cooker too. Braised short ribs with penne. It smells wonderful. I can't wait!
The "scrawny" person in our house gets Star Popsicles for dessert. That would be homemade strawberry/pineapple popsicles in a star mold. : )

Homemade chikarina soup (Italian meatball soup with chicken and pasta) and & Trader Joe's Brioche rolls ..I'll probably skip dessert...

Still have a lot of grill smoked turkey and tons of poblano peppers.
Tonight, making stew of smoked turkey, tomatillos and poblano peppers. Serving over rice. Chopped salad or iceberg lettuce, red onion, tomato, cilantro, lime juice, dash of salt and a splash of olive oil. Guacamole too.

Chuck roast in a slow oven with onions, carrots and mushrooms. And some good Italian bread from the farmer's market.

I'm making Scarpetta's Spaghetti with Tomato Basil sauce that was posted in recipes on October 5th. Just knew I'd have to give it a try. I may end up using linguine or fettucine though--my husband has something against spagetti and angel hair. What a weirdo. I'll make some homemade rolls and a salad to round out the meal.
dhorst at 2:32PM on 10/08/09
I'm watching snow-fog form off the mountains and feel the urge for gooey, overly cheese macoroni and cheese (not from a box). It'll be healthy, I swear. I'm adding bacon, tomatoes and garlic bread crumbs...maybe a fresh salad.

I could use some help figuring out what to make for dinner. Anyone? I have the following in my fridge: one head cauliflower, two ears of corn, a wee bit of blue cheese, some eggs, half a can of black beans. I also have some sweet potatoes.
Knitter at 3:21PM on 10/08/09
I'm roasting apple cider-brined pork tenderloins, with an apple cider pan sauce, Brussels sprouts, cous cous and and probably a salad.
scarletini at 3:42PM on 10/08/09
I am braising a boneless rump roast with carrots, celery and onions. It was marinated in oj, dry sherry, garlic, cumin, ginger and seven spice.
Serving it over rice with a salad. Nice and simple.
@Knitter How about roasting the veggies and serve with some fried eggs?
finsbigfan at 3:48PM on 10/08/09
@Knitter- cauliflower, corn, black beans and sweet potatoes sounds like a great stew to me. maybe top each serving with a poached egg. the blue cheese has me stumped though. maybe serve as a side dish with bread or just save for another day.
wilma at 4:39PM on 10/08/09
@Knitter--I agree with wilma a nice Mexican stew or soup topped with a poached egg. Smear the blue cheese on a cracker while you wait for dinner.
dhorst at 4:41PM on 10/08/09
arm1970--my scrawny people are football players and I am trying to get as much food/calories in them as possible!! I find myself yelling at games, "Watch out --the big kid is chasing you! Run! Run!" So embarrassing for all of us.
PoorOldMama at 4:58PM on 10/08/09
@ Knitter - Corn frittata with roasted cauliflower on the side. Or rice and beans with some of the blue cheese thrown in.
My dinner is supposed to be buttermilk fried chicken with greens and potatoes on the side, but I don't know if I have the energy for that. Maybe some take out fish tacos instead.
erinlovestoeat at 5:01PM on 10/08/09
My mom's leftover meatloaf (veal, lamb and beef with bacon on top!) with some roasted vegetables.
Chocolate chips for dessert...
bitchincamero at 5:16PM on 10/08/09
@PoorOldMama - My scrawny one is a 3 yr old girl. LOL
arm1970 at 5:40PM on 10/08/09
I'm between chorizo tacos and some kind of creamy comfort food pasta. The Times' magazine piece of Jamie Oliver had a neat looking recipe for a creme fraise based sauce with bacon and peas (I'd definitely sub in spinach here).
@scarletini - your tenderloin meal sounds fantastic! good luck with that.
ec_washington at 5:45PM on 10/08/09
Enchiladas! I've been looking forward to them all day :)
gingercookiewithlime at 5:52PM on 10/08/09
Thanks @wilma, @dhorst, and @erinlovestoeat. I'm about to spread the cheese on a roll. The oven is warming up. I'm going to roast the cauliflower and sweet potatoes together. This will get tossed with some sauteed corn, the black beans, and some defrosted rotel-style tomatoes I have in my freezer. I think I'll squirt a little lime juice over it all and serve. That should be enough for our dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow!
Knitter at 6:47PM on 10/08/09
@ec_washington, it was! The pork took on a nice sweet flavor from the brine. Chorizo tacos sound good to me!
scarletini at 7:09PM on 10/08/09
Homemade beef & barley soup, sourdough bread with sliced cheddar cheese and apples.
moibec at 7:23PM on 10/08/09
Today I made fajita's steack and chicken, refried beans, rice, green salad, and of bourse all the trimmings to go with this.

Scarpetta's tomato basil sauce was terrific last night. Light and flavorful, it really appealed to me and my 11 year old critic. My husband liked it, but he's one of those that likes lots and lots of thick sauce that's been cooked forever and he can mop up with bread. 15 year old son gets a weird panicky look when tomatoes are mentioned, so he just had pasta with butter and parm. All in all it was a good night, but I'll save the effort for when it's just me and the critic.
