Gifts for an Aussie?

Hi all -

A friend of mine lives in QLD, Australia, and has a big birthday coming up. Since we always make fun of each other for being "SO American," "SO Australian," (also "SO Canadian" - but since I'm living in the states right now its a bit irrelevant), I thought it would be fun to send him a bunch of stereotypically American stuff (food or not) that isn't necessarily available in Australia.

Of course, if we are talking about foodstuffs, they would need to be prepackaged (like Reeses' PB Cups), and can't contain any sort of fruit or veggies (like, I heard that even dried chilis are a no no).

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi Golden

We Aussies have wonderful diverse produce, but what we lack are some of your amazingly outlandish foodstuffs like Cheez Wiz, marshmallow fluff, chicken in a can and baconnaise. Great for dinner party stories, if not to be taken internally.

When I was in America, I remember being gobsmacked at the serving sizes (gargantuan), potato chips on casseroles (??), my disappointment when tasting an Oreo after reading about them for so many years (try an Australian Tim Tam - biscuit nirvana) and the fact that people not only called carrots in jelly (jello?) a SALAD, but actually expected people to eat it (hi-larious),

Hi koala,

Thanks for your response. That was exactly that i was thinking - i just can't get past buying my dear friend things that i wouldn't put into my own body! i know Australia is known for great food and obviously great produce and i know that he likes great food. Someone told me that a good gift is specialty hot sauce - that there's Tabasco but thats just about the extent of it. i might be SOL on this one :-p

By the way, where were you in the US? i'm from California so that's nothing i've experienced, but i'm not suprised. Ewwwww.

Thanks again!

I'd send some really good peanut butter (and cross my fingers it will clear customs), to try and win a few converts. Maybe a classic American recipe, like chocolate chip cookies, with a bag of Nestle chips?

Halloween candy would also be fun and timely.

My go-to gift when I visit my relatives is GUM: american gum in particular. Think all the fun fruity flavors and types we have here: watermelon, strawberry, cirtrus, etc. Last time I was there I found a pack of trident for 5 aus$!

OH! That's a realllly good idea :) he loves peanut butter and i was telling him about this brand that i'm obsessed with! You guys are geniuses.
